Dr. J. Marvin Pollard Senior passed away June 30, 2014 in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 89.
Marvin was a professional choir director and singer for over 60 years. He touched countless lives with the gift of song and inspired all of his children to pursue degrees in music education. Born in Pharr, Texas, Marvin served in the US Navy during World War II. He was an active Texas Music Educator, directing choirs in the Rio Grande Valley and serving as Secretary of TCDA. He married Nancy Pollard on June 1, 1964. The family moved north where he instructed at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside, and in 1972 became Choir Director at Peninsula College in Port Angeles, Washington. He was named Chairman of the Humanities Department there, directed both the Port Angeles and Port Townsend Community Choruses, the PALOA Chorus and numerous church choirs. He was committed to continuing education, earning his Bachelor’s, Masters and Doctorate (Ed.D) degrees from North Texas State University (now UNT). In 1986 he and Nancy returned to Texas. They lived in Houston, Mt. Enterprise and the Denton area, teaching and performing with various groups including the Denton Bach Society. He became a resident of Sterling House in 2011 and continued to lead musical activities there. A long-time Rotarian, Marvin was voted President of the Henderson Chapter, where he was also named “Rotarian Of The Year,” and remained a devoted member of Rotary Denton South until his passing.
