This month, my four boys and I were again blessed to attend Snowball Express. This was our seventh year. My boys were ages 6, 5, 3 and 1 when my husband, Lt. Louis Allen, was killed in Iraq.

Many people ask me, "How do you do it? How do you go on?" I tell them our family is strong, and we are also supported by friends, communities and organizations like SBE.

The day our buses traveled to Fort Worth was one of the most touching moments of our trip. We saw people with lawn chairs next to highways, waiting for us to pass so they could wave. We saw firemen on overpasses, policemen saluting, all the while with our guardians, the Patriot Guard, leading the way. Rolling into Fort Worth and hearing people yell, "Thank You!" to my children and seeing people wipe tears from their eyes as they waved flags and signs, reminded us all that regardless of our struggles, we are not alone.

I cannot thank you enough for coming out the way you did for us.

On behalf of the family of “TSgt. Robert Shiflet, WWII Veteran”, I want to express a very sincere “thank you” for the honors shown at his funeral, procession and burial on Nov. 24, 2012, in Mineral Wells, TX. Special thanks to the North Texas Patriot Guard members in attendance, Mission Ride Captain Floyd Kammerer and Ride Captain #2 Rusty McNab for the professional recognition shown.

Thanks to all for your dedication and sacrifice in recognizing so many such as my father! The Patriot Guard has earned such an outstanding reputation and your dedication is certainly appreciated. I look forward to joining you in future recognitions and have made a contribution to the North Texas Patriot Guard as a small token of appreciation from our family. Please continue the outstanding efforts and ride safe!

Sincerely,

Randy Shiflet

To the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders,

My family and I want to extend our sincere thanks for your honors for my father, Thomas Wilson Hill, on Dec. 4. We had been told that there would be “at least 2” Patriot Guard Riders escorting us at DFW National Cemetery. But there were so many more – both in the procession to the pavilion and standing at attention, with flags flying, when we arrived there. The sight was overwhelming; it is something we will never forget! It brought peace to our mother to know she had honored Dad and his service in World War II in the way he had desired. And your respectful presence is the enduring memory for my 24 year old son with high-functioning autism. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness.

I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for allowing me to volunteer my time to Snowball Express. As a military member I was completely overwhelmed with the support from each of you individually or your organization. It was truly an AWESOME experience! I look forward to helping out with next year events.

I am a Gold Star Mother who would like to thank your group for my family. In 2008, you provided escort and support for my son (Spc. Donald Wesley Burkett). We were moved and appreciated this very much.

This year I attended the Snowball Express with my grandson, Mason Burkett. The Patriot Guard was awesome there. I wish you could have heard the comments by the children and family members on the bus during the motorcades.  I can only say we were in awe and felt very special. The pictures on the motorcycles were a great hit also. My grandson "adopted" one of your members. Mason had a bullwhip and a gentleman from your group took the time to give him lessons and special attention. It meant a great deal to him and he talked about his "black hat man" and was looking for him everywhere we went.

It seems we are quick to complain about things these days and do not stop to take the time to tell others we appreciate them.   You have our thanks and I can tell you from talking to the mothers, grandparents, children, etc. in Dallas that you played a major part in making the trip a wonderful experience for all of us.

God Bless
Carolyn

To the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders,

I wanted to send all of you this note from the Curtis Curry Family, and tell you how grateful we were to have all of you there at my dad's funeral.  It was beautiful, honorable, and heart felt.  As a son, I could not have been more proud of him or all of you.  Please tell everyone how grateful we all were to have the Patriot Guard Riders there.

Thank you for all you do and have sacrificed for your family and country.

The North Texas Patriot Guard Riders Attended The Funeral And Interment Services Of Donnie Mears On November 3rd. Ms. Storm Made A Donation To The Patriot Guard Riders Through Our WEB Site And Received A Thank You Letter. This Is Her Response To That Letter:

You are ALL so very welcome. I only wish that I could do more for your organization. I have heard of the work you do and I've seen pictures. But on Nov. 3rd, when you were there for our family to lay my brother Donnie Mears to rest, I saw first hand what a wonderful service you are providing for so many. When our mom overheated at the gravesite, you had cool water for her. We were able to cool her off a little and make her a bit more comfortable on a terrible day for her. Thank you doesn't seem like enough. I know it's an honor for you to do what you do, so Thank you from the bottom of my heart. We truly appreciate what you did for us.

The family of Lowe L. Leach wishes to thank you for your selfless service to our family in honoring our husband and father with your presence on October 27th. He was a humble US Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. Like so many of that era, he rarely spoke of his service unless we asked him to. We were deeply moved by your participation and were so proud for him to have been honored in this way. He would have been amazed at what you did for him, but we believe it was well deserved. The certificate touched our mother's heart and she displays it proudly in her home. Every aspect was dignified and professional and inspiring. We can never thank each of you enough for your personal sacrifice for our nation. We appreciate the mission of your organization and hope our donation will help with your needs in some small way.

All I can say is THANK YOU. Riders showed up from all over the panhandle, and even as far away as Wichita Falls and Clovis, NM to show support for this family. 100+ flags stood at both the church and cemetery along with the 80 flags set out on re-bar in the cemetery. There is no way I can even begin to thank all those that helped today for fear of missing someone. While talking to Daylyn (the wife) after the mission, she said it was just breath-taking to see all the flags standing while driving thru the cemetery and she was extremely pleased with the way everything went. I realize it was a long mission, but we really do try to get the times down for staging and everything as close as possible, but sometimes we misjudge it a tad. Thank you for standing and waiting as long as you did prior to the arrival of the funeral procession. With it being close to a 30 mile drive from the church to Llano, we did have that extra time to wait. We had a great showing of 1st timers today, and hope all of the 1st timers will return. Again, on behalf of all the Ride Capts and State leadership, I thank you for showing up and giving just a little part of your day and weekend to honor this hero.

My name is Ryan Shiflet, the grandson of Robert Shiflet and son of Randy Shiflet. I just wanted to send you a message thanking your group for honoring my grandfather the way y'all did. I can't begin to tell you what it meant to us by having y'all honor him in such an amazing way. My grandfather was never one to "toot his own horn" if you will, and probably would have said that y'all didn't have to do half of what y'all did to honor him, but we certainly appreciate it. He was such a remarkable man and lived such a strong Christian life. Always putting others and their needs before his own. After talking to my dad, once everything was done, we feel that the entire service went exactly how he would have wanted it to. It really was the perfect way to honor him. So, from the bottom of my heart, my family and I thank your group for what y'all did to honor my "Gaga." He may be gone, but his legacy, his memories, his life lessons, will live on forever.

Thank you again and God Bless each and every one of you.

P.S. If anyone in your group need anything, please don't hesitate to give me a call.

Thank you again

We wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making SSG. James "Sarge" Quinn's last ride on Nov 13 2012 to the DFW National Cemetery a perfect ride. We didn't think it could get any better than the escort, then when we pull up to the pavilion and we saw the other members of the Patriot Guard standing at attention, the flags flying, arranged so precise truly brought goose bumps and tears to our eyes. We never expected anything like this. There are no words to describe just how proud and grateful The Quinn family and friends felt. So again Thank you so very much. You can be sure that James felt honored as well.

May God Bless you and The Patriot Guard for the Great service that you provide.

I wish to express my gratitude to the North Texas Patriot Guard, led by Larry Anderson, for not just attending the Wichita County Veteran’s Day Ceremony, but also going above and beyond, by coming out days prior and clearing the gravestones, by identifying and staying well past sundown to repair the flag pole lanyard, by braving the downpour of rain to assembly canopies for others to use, by placing flags on all the veterans graves and by standing watch, flags in hand, as a symbol of what makes this country truly great. Thanks!

Thank you sooo much for your part in the wonderful send off for my uncle Donnie. It meant so much to each of us to see you all there, especially my grandmother and grandfather. Losing their oldest son has been extremely difficult for them.

You probably don't hear it nearly enough, but what you do is important! Thank you so much. Since the funeral I have heard many comments praising your riders and appreciating the escort and guard you all posted for us. And thank you for the forethought of water, when my grandmother asked for water because she was starting to overheat due to her medical conditions, stress and the warm weather, none of us were prepared, but one of your guys stepped up with a cold bottle for her and other family members as well. I just can't thank you all enough for being there for my family in our time of need.

My God bless each and every one of you!!

I am writing on behalf of the family of John Stimel who were so very grateful for the PGR riders who were at his service and escorted the funeral procession from the church to the D/FW National Cemetery. I saw Linda today and she wanted me to tell you guys how much it meant for them to be there. She was still almost unable to articulate how much it meant to her and how much John would have appreciated it.

She was so impressed at the respect and honor every PGR rider showed to the whole event and she thanked me and thanked me for getting the PGR riders involved. I have to say I was so moved that I went to every man to thank them personally for their respect and participation. Thanks again from the family and myself and would you be so kind as to relay our thanks to the ridership. You guys are doing a great thing and we pray God's blessing and protection on every one of you!

THANKS A LOT,

Just returned home today. Quite a week. Mom seems to be doing well while in "public". Don't think she's dong that good while she's alone. Thankfully my brother and sister live close.

I know I don't need to thank you guys for what you did for my family. I know it was sincerely your Honor to ride Dad's mission. The entire family wanted you to know how healing your presence was. I've been on at least 100 missions and seen one or two family members thank each PGR member individually, but I've never seen an entire family do so! That was unexpected and caught me by surprise. My family never let's me down. The members of North Texas PGR can walk tall knowing that all of you are one of the finest examples of the PGR I've ever associated with. Absolutely no group of PGR rider's I've seen, have shown more respect or compassion for a Hero or their Family. Family, friends and church members were all impressed by your presence. On a number of occasions while standing a flag line, family members have approached me and said how much they appreciate what we do. Until now, I did not realize just how much the PGR means to the families. Please pass this on to all the riders that rode Dad's mission. They need to know how much each of them meant to each of us.

Lastly, my brother created a video composed of a number of photos and events in Dad's life. Please view the video and enjoy seeing a little of the man you honored. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5XfriEba_c

Thank You From Jeremie Border's Green Beret Teammates.
Posted - 10/19/2012

I got your email from the Patriot Riders website, and I saw that you were the ride captain for Jeremie Border's funeral procession escort from Dallas Love Field on Sept 08. I am SFC Anson Martin, Jeremie's teammate and was with him on the mission where he was killed. Me and the rest of the team wanted very badly to be able to attend the funeral service in Mesquite and see Jeremie one last time before his internment, but our time in Afghanistan wasn't finished yet. But it helped to see how much love Jeremie got both civilian and military during his arrival back home. We watched the local news broadcast online from our Afghanistan base, and saw how well he was escorted by you guys, and honestly were amazed at the overwhelming patriotic support from Jeremie's hometown, all the people on the side of the road, people who didn't even know Jeremie personally. Overall, we were really impressed with everything, and it took a weight off our shoulders to know that Jeremie didn't arrive back home unappreciated or the significance of it all underrated. So, from myself and the rest of Jeremie's teammates on ODA 1111 back home now in Okinawa, a truly heartfelt thank you to you and your men for ALL that you did for Jeremie and his family. You, your men, and your organization will be remembered by these Green Berets, guaranteed. Take care.

To have you all present was the greatest gift
Brought a smile to our face and our spirits did lift
Our father was a proud vet so strong and brave
Fought for the country that brought him to his grave
Burying our vet was so hard to go through
But it made it much easier seeing the red white and blue
Those beautiful flags just floating in the wind
Watching the motorcycles over the hills and around the bend
It was so breathtaking and it gave us all chills
All of your riders helped all our hearts heal
Having you all present brought a big crowd
Our Vietnam vet we are so very proud
Keep doing what your doing because y'all are so truly blessed
It helped us lay down our love one to rest
From CPL Perry Jones family we thank you so much
All of our hearts you truly did touch.
Ride on...

Thank you so much for your support during my father’s, Roy Flaherty, funeral. The beauty of the flags at the church stirred my soul. The riders that accompanied us to the cemetery were a beautiful tribute. Having your care and support was a blessing on a very difficult day. THANKS for all you and your group stands for. Your thoughts and deeds are truly high class and American. I confess, I never heard of your organization until my oldest son got a call a few days before and I approved the action.

The experience was overwhelming! I’ve never witnessed anything as beautiful as all those American flags unfurled and lined up.

I did not get the chance to offer my thanks during the event, but each of your members needs to know just how good a job they did! It was an honor to have your escort!

I am sincerely appreciative for everything your group does to honor and serve, not only for my family, but for every American that makes the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

May God Bless ya’ll and protect you on your missions.

My name is Mary and I am the aunt of Christopher Goski, USMC who died on June 10th.   I live in Florida and flew to Texas to honor my nephew Christopher and to send him to his final resting place on June 18th.

This was the first military funeral I had ever been to and I have to say that I was in awe.  The show of patriotism in Texas was enormous and more importantly you and your members made it so special.  To see all of you escorting us around Texas from the Airport to the Funeral Home and then to the cemetery was deeply appreciated.

I am sorry it took so long to write this but we are still grieving Chris' loss with a heavy heart.  Chris loved the Marines, love what he did and the buddies he worked with everyday.

Anyway, please thank all the men and women who honored Christopher that day.  It was good to see that he was respected and appreciated for all he did.

You are very special people and we will keep you in our hearts and prayers that you will continue to provide this honor to all future veterans.

Dear Patriot Guard Rider Members
07/01/2012

In the past two months, I have lost four of my uncles, all were brothers and WWII veterans. Three of their families requested the presence of the Patriot Guard Riders at their services. I just want to take the time to say a huge "Thank You" to these men and women that so selflessly give of their time to honor these heroes and their families. It is such a breathtaking sight so see the many American flags lining the entrance to the church and or cemetery each time and the men and women that stand tall and proud with these flags to honor the deceased. It makes your heart swell with pride to remember what Old Glory represents and what these men did in honor of it.

Again, I just want to say "Thank You" to all that have supported the missions for my Uncles Gus, Marvin, and Edd Schumann in the past two months. I also want to thank the tireless efforts of Ride Captains, Ray Calvert, Jerry Austin, and my husband, Jimmy Murphy, for their dedication to making each one a memorable experience for the family. Words can never express the gratitude we, as a family, have for the unsung work these members do each and every day to honor our veterans.

Thank you again,
Lori (Schumann) Murphy

As Pennsylvania PGR riders (district 6) I wanted to send along a heartfelt thanks from my brother and I for your recent mission for Herman (MO) Molen. We have had the great fortune to know MO and his niece and husband, the Sweetman's, through the second Schweinfurt Memorial Association. This was the the raid when Mo was shot down and taken POW October 14, 1943. Dad was severely wounded on this same mission. We have attended many reunions together and have never tired of hearing Mo tell his stories. His later work throughout the country on behalf of all POW's is a model. The statement "they don't make them like they used to" certainly applies here. Please let your district know that your help has been noted and always appreciated. This would have been a really tough one for me to stand in the flag line - I'm still tearing up as I write this. But I don't need to explain that to you.

I grew up in a Navy household during the Viet Nam war, and frequently experienced an officer and enlisted man parking in front of a neighbor's home more times than a person should. I witnessed too many friends whose father would never come home. Then later, those who did come home were often so emotionally scarred they had to self-medicate to ease their pain and suffering. This lead to other problems in their personal lives and often ended in the vet losing those closest to him.

I've always had a great compassion for those men/women who see and do things a human being isn't meant to experience.

Today I attended the funeral of one of those men who died with no loved ones there to be with him as he was laid to rest. My Dad was his friend and went to the funeral. My sister and I also went to be supportive of him (we didn't know the deceased).

The Patriot Guard was there, and their selfless generosity in assisting with the ceremony moved me to tears. I knew then and there I want to be part of this group and was excited to learn I didn't have to be a veteran.

This was the most sane experience I've had in this time when it seems the world is going crazy, and I want to be a part of this group and give back.

I would just like to say THANK YO U each and every one of you for all you did for the Goski Family today. I would like to send a heartfelt Thank You to each and every one of the men and women in your group. I was truly speechless yesterday at what you all did at the service for Sgt. Christopher Goski. Tim Goski (Christopher’s dad) has worked for me for a number of years and is an amazing man and has an amazing family and he said more than once that what you all were doing for his family and his son was truly amazing and it was an HONOR for you guys to be involved. I stand up and solute each of you and Thank you for what you do and for what it means to these families.

Please continue to make that everlasting mark on these families and friends. I know that just being a part of yesterday’s service has truly touched me forever!

From The Michael Lashley Memorial Service
04/14/2012

Just wanted to thank all the riders that came to my brother Michael Lashley’s memorial service yesterday my brother Rick and I are both pgr members and have been to many missions and the pgr always stands tall and silent in respect but this time the pgr went above and beyond the normal at the last moment before the service the preacher could not make it to the service so we did not know what we were to do and at that time pgr member Richard Hayes come to me and said he would be honored to do the service he did a great job I will never forget after he spoke for my brother he and Randy Livingston folded the flag and when Richard Hayes presented the flag to my mother I noticed the big red one patch on Richard’s vest it was the same my brother wore on his first tour in Vietnam no other service could honor my brother more than a brother from the same unit I salute you all and thanks from my Mother and the family, and your pgr brother Glen Lashley army vet 74-78

"What a perfect day for the Brien Family"
04/11/2012

Dear Dan, I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you and your group of PGR members who helped with and attended Jerry's service on Friday. It just made things go so easy for us, we didn't have to know how to get there, we didn't have to know what to do next, you made us aware of all we needed to know before hand. It was an honor to have you all present.

My sister-in-law was so impressed with all you did. And she loved the military ceremony. She had never witnessed a military service before like the one for her brother. She was so very proud of all that took place Friday.

Again Dan, thanks so much.
What a perfect day for the Brien Family

East and North Texas Patriot Guard Riders -

My sincerest thanks for your support during Douglas Hewitt's funeral. The families are very grateful but due to his unexpected passing, understandably might not be as timely in expressing their gratitude -I extend their thanks in my support of them as a Douglas' lifelong friend.

The coordination with law enforcement helped us get from Tyler to the DFW National Cemetery at a good pace -though patience is plentiful during times as these.

Thank you for your service to your country -and continued service to fellow country -men & women.

Sincerely;
Jason Barth

"to the neatest bunch of Americans I have ever met"
02/26/2012

Larry,

I nor my wife's family will ever know how to explain how much we appreciate everything you and the Patriot guard did. You were able to take a sad moment in our lives and make it memorable in a good way to the family.

This family is a large family that is spread out over the U.S. Over the years they have not come together as they should have. After the honor you and the military gave to Darin, they came back to my place and promised all to talk at least once a month and try to see each other as often as they can. Again you did more for this family than you'll ever know.

I also wanted to tell you if Mitzi and I do get Darin's Harley back from California, Austin and Mitzi and I still want to ride with you.

Again to the neatest bunch of Americans I have ever met.

Thank you, God Bless

"from the grateful loved ones of Jack Taliaferro"
02/25/2012

As grieving family members arrived for the funeral, a sea of American flags waved the mourners into a safe and sacred place to say goodbye to beloved World War II Navy Seabee Hero Jack Taliaferro, 90, who served in the Pacific at Peleliu. All hearts swelled with pride and astonishment at the sight and sounds of the thundering stream of heroes "the Patriot Guard Riders" as they filled the grounds of Mt. Olivet in Fort Worth on Monday, February 6, 2012. For more than an hour, they rolled in at a steady pace and numbers difficult to count. They came on rumbling bikes, in cars and trucks, and some walked with canes and walkers to salute Jack and encircle his family with our homeland’s flags. Their faces were solemn; their ages not young. Far-away gazes hinted of their own stories deep within. Love, dedication, and respect for their country and countrymen had brought them there that day and seemed to glow in their eyes as they stood watch. They graciously accepted a few thankful handshakes. Some tipped their caps in respect and spoke kind words. Humble heroes, true heroes - our beloved military past and present.

Jack’s loved ones and friends will speak for many years about the honor and the impact from the tribute paid by the U.S. Navy and the Patriot Guard Riders to one of their brothers in service to this great nation. Thank you, John W., Bob G., Rock M., Ken C., Randy S., Dennis C., Perry C., Russell L., Jeffry M., Sterling H., James A., Robert T., Everett (Rick) A., Jim R., Art Z., Terry S., Ron B., Richard B., Darl E., Anita T., Floyd K., W. G. R., Al T., Bob P., Dan M., Charlie A., Garland R., Rick C., Mike U., Danny C., Larry M., Jack V., B. J. F., James C., Erna C. and those not known to us by name who played a part in honoring Jack and his loved ones. God Bless you all and your loved ones. God Bless America.

"Thanks" From Marsha Hines
02/09/2012

Dear Steve,

You and the Patriot Guard Riders added a special touch to my husband's funeral at the DFW National Cemetery on December 29th; an extra measure of dignity that truly honored Jim's life. Thank you so much!

You may recall that you were there for another funeral when our niece Leslie asked if you were there for Jim Hines. The timing worked out perfectly for the riders to be part of our day, too. I cannot adequately express how my spirit soared when I saw the riders standing at attention to the right and the honor guard to the left. They were saluting a man that served his country for 21 years, including two tours in Vietnam. Jim retired as a first sergeant, but was also a drill sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood MO where he trained recruits to survive their tours in Vietnam.

Jim was also a motorcyclist, but his health forced him to quit riding years ago. He was 100% disabled due to agent orange exposure, but his health never stopped him from enjoying God's gift of life.

Please relate my thanks to the organization.

God's richest blessings, Marsha Hines

A Personal Message From "Rock"
01/03/2012

Many riders know that I lost my dear spouse and Stephanie’s mother, PJ to breast cancer on 11 December. Paula fought the battle for 7+ years. But in the end, the cancer and chemo were too much to overcome. Paula valued the men and women she met with the PGR and enjoyed participating with her bright yellow trike. Stephanie and I want to thank you all for your sincere condolence wishes. They are much appreciated and sustain us through this difficult time. The North Texas PGR’s generous contribution to the American Cancer Society in Paula’s memory, is another example of the kindness, thoughtfulness, and class of this great organization.

You have our utmost gratitude and ongoing THANKS - Rock & Stephanie Malaspina

Sincerest Thanks from Don Fickert's Family
01/03/2012

It is difficult to put into words how truly grateful I and my family are for the inestimable services you provided to honor the passing of my father, Donald Fickert.

The perimeter individuals who stood at attention with their flags and the young sailor and soldier who performed the ceremony all proved themselves worthy of representing America's esteemed Armed Forces.

The service and reading from the Bible were of great comfort to my Mother and we could not have asked for a more respectful and heartfelt observance to lay to rest this proud Veteran who was so eager and willing to serve his country.

If ever I can do something for you in return, please do not hesitate to contact me and please pass along these words of gratitude to everyone involved. May you all be blessed and kept in good graces.

Thank you for caring so deeply for your fellow man; especially our precious Veterans and their Families.

Mark Fickert and the extended Fickert Family.

Honoring Veterans - Patti Pfeiffer is a columnist for Star Community Newspapers
11/16/2011

It’s a somber place, a place which exudes respect, a locale where hilltops showcase the faraway and rows of rounded, gray markers seemingly spring from the ground and sprawl forever. It’s a place that catches billions of tears, witnesses countless shattered hearts, where sobs echo throughout the rolling terrain and thundering gunfire shatters silence, where the massive wavering American flag never rises or falls below half staff.

DFW National Cemetery is a place like no other, a place everyone should visit.

The line of rippling, oversized American flags blowing in the morning breeze greeting drivers on the bustling byway in addition to those turning into the funeral home signaled this would be no ordinary service. There in front of the building was another verification. Men and women standing tall - one person reverentially posted next to each and every American flag planted near the sidewalk leading into the chapel.

They looked straight ahead. They uttered not a word. They were not there as a friend or relative of the deceased. They were there because he served. It’s what the Patriot Guard Riders do. And do often, sometimes several times a day.

"We stand tall and silent in honor of our heroes," explains Patriot Guard Riders Deputy State Captain Steve Hirtzel "Our presence is one hundred percent a show of respect."

These are not stereotypical, tough, rough, mucho motorcycle type. Among them on this particular day are retired men, white-hair grannies, middle-age women, three teens.

Their dress is fitting their riding role: Doo rags, baseball caps, jeans, boots, black leather jackets and vests adorned with pins, buttons and badges proudly proclaiming missions, positions, associations, beliefs and personal information: The Wall Escort, Army Wife, John 3:16

Surprisingly the all-volunteer organization is not comprised entirely of veterans but civilians wanting to give respect to those who’ve given so much, their utmost to our country. After all their motto is Standing For Those Who Stood for Us.

A member for five years, family is top among the reasons Hirtzel is a Patriot Guard Rider. His father served in WWII, his son currently serves in the Coast Guard and two nephews are in the Air Force. His willingness to be part of the organization comes naturally. "It’s how I show my respect to those who serve, have served and will serve," Hirtzel says.

With American and Marine flags attached, the line of motorcycles escorted the procession from the funeral home to the National Cemetery through busy intersections, through the cemetery gates, slowly down the winding road leading to the memorial site. The Riders arrived first, positioned themselves next to the flags again lining the walkway.

The hearse is opened. In dress blue uniforms Marines carried the folded flag and remains. The Riders saluted. They placed hands over their hearts. Though the deceased is unknown, they shed tears too.

The interment service begins. It’s a scene played out in movies, described in books but nothing I’d personally witnessed.  Full military honors. These were sights and sounds to behold - and forever hold dear.

The precision of the Marine’s every movement from the robotic-style salutes to their orchestrated steps to the faultless flag folding.

Standing motionless on top of a stone retaining wall between two cedar trees they were barely visible. Only when the barking command was heard did the attention of family and friends divert from front to side, in their direction. Seven Marines, their white-gloved hands grasping rifles. There’s a clank, then clatter. Boom. Clank. Clatter. Boom. And again.

The casings are carefully collected by an officer, solemnly walked down the hill and placed in the flag’s folds as the lone bugler plays. Taps’ mournful melody fills the air, weighing heavy.

Amazing Grace  from bagpipes concludes the service. Patriot Guard Riders stand at attention as tear-streaked attendees slowly disband.

This was no ordinary service. It was more than touching, much more than a memorable send-off. This was memory-etching, the ultimate. This was truly a display of honor where honor was most certainly due. For this funeral was for a man who fought gallantly for his country, a veteran of two wars.

Veterans deserve honor, not at life’s end but more importantly while living life. Make it a practice to thank every vet. What we enjoy today is because what they do, did and will do. They deserve thanks. We owe them one and all.

I'd like to take just a minute to say once again how much the PGR presence yesterday at the Mesquite funeral of Leland Ingram meant to me and to the rest of the family. As always, y'all did a great job, and the flag line certainly added to the Coast Guard military honors for this World War II vet. Thank you.

From the Family of CDR Chuck Doherty, USN (Ret)-Dallas/Fort Worth
11/08/2011

We would like to thank the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders, Staff, and their supporters in honor of my father's Oct 17th, 2011 Memorial Ceremony in DFW. It was an honor to have so many people come out to support my father and our family. We are honored for such citizens that provided this service during this difficult time. This was a highlight of our father's memorial service. We are proud of the volunteers that provided such professionalism and honor for our father Chuck.

Commander Chuck Doherty, USN (Retired) served 20 years in the US Navy as an Engineer and Seabee. He was a proud military man and loved serving his country. He was a proud Texan and Texas Aggie. He would be honored to have seen the large amount of veterans and volunteers that paid tribute. When our family looked at all the motorcycle riders that were in front us on the freeway (on the way to DFW cemetery), we were overcome with emotion. We will never forget this sight.

Our father was due to return home to Texas after working on an overseas construction site in support of the US Military and Diplomatic Operations in October 2011. We were very saddened of his unexpected passing at the age of 59. Hence, this has been a difficult time for our family. Thank you again for all your help in supporting our family.

I would like to extend a thanks to each and every individual that gave their time and effort in his memorial. We will never forget your service. Please accept our monetary donation for future Patriot Guard missions.

With blessings and much gratitude,

The Doherty Family

PGR Inspires Patriotism At McKesson
11/02/2011

I wanted to take this time to send you some of the feedback I have heard from my co-workers.

On behalf of the McKesson Contract Administration Department; Pharma, Medical Surgical and Specialty, Thank you for what the PGR does to support our Military. One of the team members here came up to me awhile ago to thank me for bringing the PGR to the attention of McKesson’s employees. He told me that his best-friend from high school was killed a couple years ago and that the PGR turned a hard time for the family into a very positive memory. He said every time he sees a biker on the highway or out and about it reminds him of the day he made the walk down the flag line shaking the hands of those riders who supported his friend. We have created a flag line here at work with the names, branch and rank of heroes fallen/active and retired related or friends of employees here at McKesson. This guy walks down the flag line everyday and smiles because he is filled with honor and pride as he remembers his friend. I never would have known that about him, now every time I see him I just smile. We haven’t talked since then but it fills me with great joy to know that I am a part of an organization as strong as the PGR. I stood up in front of two department meetings and spoke for 15-20 minutes about the PGR and even cried in front of my co-workers. Ron DeBose was one of the guys listening and is now a very proud PGR member. I now know who all in my department have served and who has family members serving currently. A few even told stories of their time and of their grandparent’s time. Talking about the PGR and about each other’s stories seemed to bring the patriotism out in our department! And let me tell you it was great! Mary’s son was deployed a few weeks after my first speech. She has a picture of her son at her desk in full uniform. Employees came to her telling her Thanks and giving her hugs. Every so often I hear someone go up to her at her desk asking about her son and just supporting her. Angela started talking about her grandpa and we all learned that he was a POW during WWII. Other employees started looking into their family history and found out they too had family members who had served and some found out some interesting stories that they never knew.

So on behalf of my co-workers and myself, Thank You for everything the PGR does.

Thank you, Tamra Upchurch

From The Daughter Of Howell Havens
10/31/2011

Dear Mr. Emmons,

I know several weeks have gone by since the Patriot Riders of North Texas honored my dad by escorting us to the cemetery in DFW, but I wanted to express my deepest appreciation and heartfelt admiration for the gift you presented my father. He was a very staunch American with values from times past. Howell Havens loved his country and was extremely adamant about having served his country. Some of my relatives wondered why I chose the certificate from your organization in lieu of the flag. Well, the reason is very simple-.your riders and motorcycles bearing our US flag were the first things I saw as I arrived at the funeral home. That picture and the dedication of your organization hit me hard with pride and love. If my dad had been there, he would have shook your hands and gave you a pat on the back for "standing tall". The visuals of your riders and the flags waving as we drove to the cemetery touched my spirit and heart immensely.

Again, thank you for the time, honor and gift of brotherhood each of you showed my dad!

Each of you will always have a special place in my heart,

Hope Havens-Smith

From The Sister Of Bobby Ray Woodard
10/19/2011

This is from Maki Tyner, sister of Bobby Woodard. We stood a flag line for Bobby in Wichita Falls last April. She asked me to send her note and poem to our riders and to thank all of us.

Mike Johnson.

If you want to see the rainbows, sometimes you have to ride in the rain.........(me)

Mike:
I am sending you a little thank you that I wrote after we said good-bye to Bobby and if you will please forward it to your group; I am Bobby's (as well as Donnie's & Tommy's) baby sister. Gary is my husband and Brandi is our only child:

Thank you to each of you...
...whether you sent me a card, a note, wrote on my brothers website, thought about my broken heart ,
...called me, prayed for me & my family...sent flowers, came to say good-bye to my brother...

Please know that EVERYTHING that you did for me, was appreciated by me, as well as my mother, Gary, Brandi & her family and my other brothers & their families, as well as Bobby’s family that he left behind.

My life will NEVER be the same, but somehow with your support, I will go on, so bear with me as I travel a road that I have dreaded coming to, for many a year.

Now that it is finally over, I ask for your patience as I learn to walk alone, without him beside me.

I am sure that I will stumble and fall, many times,
...but please...know that I appreciate you all and all that you do for all of us.

And please, be patient with me as I travel into a world that I have never known before.
Life without my beloved Bobby...

Thank you all for everything!

And to the Patriot Guard Riders, you ALL will never know how much Bobby's family appreciated your presence at his services. He would have been proud, so from him...as well as his extended family, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a service that could never have been what it was...without each and every one of you there for him! We are so very thankful and proud of your services to OUR fallen hero! May God bless you all, as you have blessed us...we thank you!

OUR American Hero
David Hall
10/17/2011

PGR Thank You

On behalf of the Texas Patriot Guard Riders and the family of David Hall (Belladier of the Traveling Liberty Bell and Law Memorial) we would like to issue a sincere "Thank you" for the honors and respect shown to David and his family.

The hundreds of riders who came from Texas and the surrounding states were touched at the enormous amount of compassion and love that was shown to this true American hero. The flag line was filled with men and women whose lives had been touched by this man. Standing with the PGR were Gold Star families, American Legion members, Admirals of the Texas Navy, member of Snowball Express, the Texas Guard, representatives from every branch of military service along with countless other groups and friends.

The celebration of David’s life touched the hearts of the hundreds of guests who were in attendance. The service was stopped at one point, at the request of the family, so the family and guest could stand and turn to the balcony filled with Patriot Guard Riders to pay them a standing ovation for the love and honor they were paying to a true Patriot and Patriot Guard Member.

Those who attended graveside service led by so many Patriot Guard friends were witness to history as full military honors were paid to a man who had never served as a member of the military. David’s service to the military came in the form of honors paid to the many fallen heroes and their families by his ringing of the Liberty Bell. He believed that we are here for each other and that the highest calling a man can have is to lay down his life for his friends. David believed that each person has a duty to live his life to the fullest and that he could best dispense his duty by giving final honors to those who have literally laid down their lives for others.

We would like to give a special thank you to the Patriot Guard Riders of North Texas who during the day on Friday stood five final services for veterans, then turned and stood "Tall and Silent" in a flag live for the David’s visitation. This type of honor and respect is what the Patriot Guard Riders stand for.

Thank you from David's Brother-In-Law

I just wanted to send a note to you, thanking you for all you did in preparation for and during David Hall's Memorial this past Saturday. It was a real pleasure to work with with so many PGR Members and Ride Captains during the day. Everyone operated in a degree of professionalism and honor that is really hard to describe. Everyone was in their place, doing their task, with respect and honor. I have met many of the riders over the years as I went with David to honor the fallen, but many of them I met Saturday for the first time - what an honor to go down the line and shake every hand. I think I cried all day, and I know many of them did too.

I'd certainly like to brag a little on Mike Lambert, as I had occasion to work directly with him during the entire event. He always kept me up to speed on what was going on and what was coming next . . . that really helped me and the rest of our family get through a very tough day. And then, just to see the number of riders who made it a point to come and honor David, was, well . . . overwhelming.

Thank you again for all you have done personally, and for all those you represent. Never have we as a family been more proud to know you and work with you.

Respectfully,

My Dear Family, Patriot Guard Riders of Texas,

I have been trying to write this letter for several weeks now, and just haven’t been able to put words to paper.

I have been to so many services for our young men, vets, and Guard members, and each time my heart hurt for the families for their loss.

My time came on the 31st of Aug 2011. On 15 Sept. our Guard family came and surrounded us with Honor, Respect and Love. On 16 Sept. we celebrated the life of the Wingman, and I know that he was having a much better time than I. I believe that even he would have been amazed at the turn out. He really would have enjoyed the ride down I-20, no traffic, just the wail of the sirens that he love so.

I cannot tell you of the love he had for the Guard, or the respect he had for each of you that put aside your private affairs to honor our heroes. We met as strangers and came away family. I may not remember each name, but your face is in my heart and in my mind, and I will always remember you as someone special in my life. I am sorry that I was not able to speak to all of you, but I wish you to know that I did see a lot of faces of folks that I have not seen in along time. It was a flash back to the old days of the PGR.

I just wish to say I love you, and how much I appreciate your show of Love, Honor and Respect for the Wingman.

Letter Left On A Motorcycle
10/14/2011

I received the following letter left on my bike in the parking garage at work. It touched me and I wanted to share it with everyone else. It shows that we do help people remember. The mission he speaks of was well before I started with the Patriot Guard, but I am sure some of you may have been there.

Jeffry.Maynard@nokia.com

The letter reads:

To whom it may concern:

I have seen your bike with the Patriot Guard decals on it as I pass by in the parking garage on my way to Oracle in the building at 6031 Connection Drive. The first time I saw you I felt a stab of pain. And then gratitude.

The pain was because of the reminder of our family’s loss of a very dear friend in 2006 in Iraq. Nathan Aguirre was a young Army medic who was my son’s best friend. Nathan volunteered to go outside the wire with a patrol from another unit when their medic was ill. The patrol got hit and Nathan was crawling to get to a wounded soldier when he was killed by a sniper. We were stunned to receive the news at the time, and the funeral was so difficult. But, I am grateful for what your group did. It was very comforting to see members of your organization standing at attention outside the church, holding Old Glory and other flags. It made us feel proud of our country despite our grief. Your group even lead the procession as they drove the hearse by his former high school, Creekview High in Carrolton, so faculty and students could say goodbye.

I will never forget what you guys did. My dad made it back safely from Vietnam in 1972 but there were no parades for them or for their fallen comrades in that war. I am grateful for what you do to honor our heroes.

Sincerely,

Rob Lokkesmoe

John,

I wanted to thank you again as our "Ride Captain" for the services that you provided on behalf of my son Cory. He was so impressed and wanted to become a Patriot Rider when we saw a news spot on television. I truly appreciate each of the riders that were there and stood by the flags. So many people made wonderful comments as to the patriotism that they felt when seeing all of you there. All of you are truly a blessing and the service that you provide deserves a heartfelt thank you.

Snowball Express - Snowflake Event
09/18/2011

What a thrilling event for the Snowball Express!

The 2011 Lone Star Camero - Classic Chevrolet - Patriot Guard Riders to Texas Motor Speedway event was full of fun, memories and great hot dogs and snow cones! For the Camero enthusiasts the day was fired up with Camero owners r-e-v-v-i-n-g their engines. Classic Chevrolet delighted the event goers with great food and hospitality. The SNOWFLAKE volunteers kept the face painting and games rolling. The colorful event was highlighted by a custom Camero car ride led by the Patriot Guard Riders to the Texas Motor Speedway. The kids were all smiles as they drove three exciting laps around the track.

If you missed the event, you will certainly feel like you were there in the above photos.

To the Texas PGR, you were a second family to my dad, he loved you all and would have done anything at anytime for anyone of you. His health prevented him from doing a lot in the last few years but his heart remained with the PGR. Thanks for everything you do for him, and others such as myself and the other veterans in the nation.

Dear Patriot Guard Riders of North Texas,

I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you with all my heart for being there for my friend Pfc. Jesse Dietrich. Getting him home that way was not the way we wanted him back.

You men and women are like the guardian angels to the fallen soldiers. You guard them until they are resting peacefully.

I know that if Jesse was here, he would thank all of you. All of us were grateful that you were there.

Much love and thanks.

From The Family Of Ret. Capt. Menandro Parazo
09/07/2011

The family of Ret. Capt. Menandro Parazo would like to express our thanks and gratitude for the wonderful display of patriotism and respect the Patriot Guard Riders of North Texas gave to our father's funeral service at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on August 30, 2011.  I am confident our father was pleased and grateful that his service and loyalty to our country is remembered and honored. His survival of the Bataan Death March is indeed a miracle and a testament to a soldier's will to survive.

We also thank you for the beautiful plaques your organization gave to each of Mr. Parazo's children to commemorate the service. We would like to make a $250.00 donation to the Patriot Guard Riders of North Texas as a token of our thanks to your organization. Mr. John Blase and his riders were so organized and impressed all who attended the service and also those who viewed it on Channel 11 last Friday evening on the 10 o'clock news. The news clip can be found on cbsdfw.com, September 2, 2011.

Thank you for continuing to honor our heroes and please thank the gentlemen who gave of their time at our father's service.  We are grateful to all of you. Our note of thanks and our donation will be delivered to your office by Mr. John Blase.

Sincerely,

The Parazo and Booth families

Read More About "Final Call" As Described By Jim Davenport

Thank You for your assistance on Saturday, you cannot know how much it meant to the family.

Chief Ed Ragsdale wanted me to extend his personal Thanks as well.   He called me late Saturday night and said that at the reception after the service the Preacher and several family members raved about the Patriot Guard.  They had never seen such a display of respect and honor, and were deeply moved and impressed.

I will forward a short description of the meaning of the "Ringing of the Bell" and the "Last Call" as soon as I can assemble my thoughts legibly.  They are usually such an emotional part of the ceremony that often the speaker himself /herself is unable to complete the task without breaking down in tears.  There is seldom a dry eye among those in attendance.

As you noticed Saturday, the call to duty often occurs at the worst possible time.  The timing of the Alert Tones during the service could not possibly have been scripted any more realistic than as they occurred.  And obviously there was a Higher Power at work  as the timing  was purely accidental.

Jim Davenport

Here is the script that was used on Saturday (AMR 500 is the callsign of our dispatcher) :

After tones – “AMR 500 on the air with a special alarm and announcement."

Dispatch “Union Valley 701”.....

Pause (no response)

Dispatch “Union Valley 701”....

Pause (no response)

Dispatch “Union Valley 701”...

Firefighter “Union Valley 701 has responded to a higher priority call”

Dispatch” It is with deep regret and sorrow we must announce that Retired-Fire Chief and Red Cross volunteer Leonard Plemmons has answered his last alarm. He has returned to the Lord's station where he awaits his next assignment. We thank Chief Plemmons for his service to our department & our community. We will never forget his Honor, Courage and Duty.”

Standing for freedom

On July 19, as family and friends arrived at Life Tabernacle Church for the funeral of Robert H. Parker, a Navy war veteran, our hearts swelled with emotion not only for the passing of a wonderful man, but at the sight of all the American flags, even the Navy flag, blowing freely in the hot Texas wind. Standing beside each flag was a member of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders. Many of these members are military war veterans, others are volunteers who pay honor to those who have served for the freedom of our country.

The temperature that day reached 105, but there they stood for several hours, perspiration dripping off their faces, once again sacrificing for a cause they believe in. Our country may have it's problems, but as long as we continue to have dedicated Americans such as these who willingly give of themselves, we will always remain strong! We say thank you to the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders, to our U.S. military and veterans and all Americans who stand for our country's freedom.

From The Teddy Sherrill Mission
07/21/2011

On behalf of the Sherrill Family, I want to thank the North Texas PGR for their presence and show of respect during the interment of Teddy "Ted" Sherrill.

It was my honor as a PGR member of NW Louisiana to join North Texas PGR in paying our respects to my Father-in-Law's Life. North Texas PGR made this a very proud and memorable day.

Very special thanks to you, Mike (Upchurch - Ride Captain). I deeply appreciate your constant communication and unwavering calm throughout the mission. Your briefing and execution of the mission allowed me to focus on my family and to reassure them that Ted would be in the best of hands.

Ted's Wife, Minnie (my mother-in-law), wanted to make sure that your Grandson knew how much she appreciated his presence, as well.

And please Thank Bobby Short for the great photos.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if ever you or North Texas PGR need anything.

Best Regards,

Charles Chrisman

Received from one of the Waxahachie parade organizers

To the Patriot Guard Riders,

Many thanks to you for showing up in force at our 4th of July Parade. It was a magnificent show of love and support that you gave on to our veterans Saturday morning. Several Vietnam vets were overheard on the trailers to say that they have never experienced anything like this, ever. We saw a good number of people in the crowd wiping away the tears (and no it wasn't sweat).

Thanks again to you all,

From The Uncle (And New PGR Member) Of Andrew Krippner

Although I walked around and thanked every PGR member who attended my nephew’s visitation, I would also like to thank all of the riders at the funeral services. This includes the church, the ride, the National Cemetery and all of the efforts in organizing the mission. My conversation with you at the visitation enlightened me to the PGR. I am now a member myself in the Illinois chapter and have been able to participate in a couple of missions. Once again my deepest appreciation to all the Texas PGR members who attended and even those who could not, for all you do for all of our heroes KIA, deploying, returning alive, or recovering.

Thank you very much, Keith M. Krippner Uncle of Pvt Andrew M. Krippner KIA 5/23/11 Laid to rest 6/3/11

I observed the bikes headed to Crestview and it was an impressive sight. You guys are just so inspiring. I have been to some truly pitiful funerals for veterans, they deserve so much more. This is where you guys come in to provide dignity to those who may not have seen much lately.

You looked great!

From The Son of SN Hugh T. Stevenson

I wanted to thank you again on behalf of our family for your participation in Dad's memorial service. Words cannot describe the pride that we felt as we drove up to the church and saw the flags flying. While you said that you were there to honor Dad, know that we were truly honored by your presence. Numerous friends said how much they knew Dad would have loved the fact that the Patriot Guard came to his service with their motorcycles. At the end of the service, I had a huge smile on my face and all of you were a part of that smile. Thank you for your service to our Country and to its military heroes.

Regards,

New PGR Members

I come from a military family. My children all wore the uniform and all male members of my family served active duty in the various branches of the US Military. I am a patriot and joined for the purpose of bringing home my friend Pvt. Andrew Krippner-KIA, 5/23/11 Afghanistan and to aid in any PGR Missions in my area.

Thank You for allowing me membership. Thank You for bringing Andy Krippner home with pride and dignity and for safeguarding his family in the process.

"people that didn't even know Dad"

I apologize for not writing this sooner. We're still somewhat numb by the sudden passing of my Dad. But I wished to let you and the Patriot Guard Riders know how deeply touched my family was by your presence this past Saturday. We always knew our Dad was a great and loving father and friend, and although our hearts were heavy with sorrow, our spirits were lifted by the flag line and your display of honor, respect, and compassion for the family of a fellow veteran. It validated that regardless of affiliation or association, that there were people that didn't even know Dad, who appreciated his time on earth.

When the Patriot Guard escorted and stood for my Dad's brother, Robert Franks, in Lampassas, a few years ago, Dad was, as we were Saturday, impressed and touched by the reverence and respect displayed. So when you called back and said you would attend, it brought comfort to my Mom and the family. And, that Dad would have been thrilled to know he had much more, than just the '12-or-so-people' that he joked about, to attend his funeral.

On the behalf of the family of Ross Franks, I thank you and each member of the Patriot Guard for your service to our country, the honor of your presence, and the respect you displayed for my Dad's memory.

Sincerely,
David R.Franks

Flash Mobbers!

Hello, Flash Mobbers!

Wow!  What a great job you did!  Thank you to each and everyone of you for your efforts in making the very first "Patriotic Welcome Home Flash Mob" such a great success!  We could not have done it without you all!  As I know you all could see, smiles and waves from soldiers overhead, they felt very appreciative of our message!

Special thanks to Bob Vincent of Tricolor Media Group and all his crew for filming.  Also, Bruce Quernemoen joined us to help out with the filming!  Also, a special thanks for our friends Hank Henley and, our Creative Director and his talented singers who helped to support us.  Thank you David Whitehead, National President of VMERG, for supporting this VMERG DFW event!  Thank you to the DFW Airport Board, AA Corporate Communications and to the DPS for working with us so that we could send out this special message!

Those volunteers attending included VMERG Members, AA employees, AE employees,  volunteers from the USO, members from the Airline Ambassadors and our own North Texas Patriot Guard Riders!  KISS joined in and sent a special message as well!  Thanks to all of you who joined in to make this message so "loud and proud."  We know there are many others who we did not have the chance to meet, but thank you to ALL!  Friday was very trying with the five hour mechanical delaying our arrival from 0800 to 1250, not mention the month's earlier schedule change!  You all gave some very special heroes an extremely heartfelt and memorable welcome home!

Our official VMERG video will be shared with you once editing has been completed.  We are hoping within the next month.  Our crews volunteered their time and they do have to work our video in within their very busy schedules!

If you have any flash mob photos to share, please send them to me and I will share them with you all!

Thanks again, everyone!

Thank you so very much again

I want to say "Thank you so much" to the Patriot Guard Riders and all that you do for our Veterans. My husband Charles "Bennie" Knox passed away in February and I requested the Patriot Guard Riders for his funeral and the sight just took my breath away. There were more Patriot Guard Riders there than actual family and friends. But it meant so much to me and my family for the generous show of support for us.

"Thank you so very much again" Always a proud American.

Karen Knox

To the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders:

You truly honored my grandfather's memory ("Papaw" also known as PFC A.D. Colwell) and his service and dedication to the Korean War and Pacific Occupation of Japan at the D/FW National Cemetery Tuesday, May 10th.

Papaw's daughters (my mother and aunt) as well as our whole extended family and friends were so greatly touched by the outward showing of your honor and respect for those that have served our country. As we were ushered in to Pavilion C by the PGR bike riders, the sight of countless American flags lining the road and pavilion took our breath away and brought tears to our eyes. I can not express how much it means to me and to all of my family to have seen so many PGR members come who took time out of their own lives to honor someone else who they did not even know personally. As they stood at attention, saluting my Papaw as he took his last ride, I know it would have meant the world to him to have seen such a sight and to me, his granddaughter, it made me even more proud to call A.D. Colwell, my Papaw.

Thank you North Texas Patriot Guard Riders from the bottom of my heart. Your service of appreciation to my Papaw meant more to me and my family than you all will ever know.

With Sincere Gratitude and Respect,
Michelle Pierce
A.D. Colwell's very proud Granddaughter

THANK YA'LL

I want you all to know that I was truly in awe of the quantity of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders that came out to Honor my brother Bob. Your Dedication, Patriotism, Strength, Courage and your Commitment to the task you have freely all chosen to take on is so appreciated by me and everyone that was at my brothers service. It was God's will that allowed me to see ya'll on TV. Then God placed one of the North Texas PGR riders (I am so very sorry I do not remember his name) at the Whataburger on Saturday morning 5-2-11 on Collins in Arlington and there he stood next to his bike drinking his coffee. The drive thru line had me stopped right in front of him. I had to roll my window down and thank him for what the PGR stood for and what they are doing for all the Veterans and their families. Then I told him about my brother just passing away and that we would lay him to rest on Thursday. He suggested that I call ya’ll and that the North Texas PGR would gladly show up to stand for my brother.

I just want to tell everyone involved with the North Texas PGR and their families they are doing an awesome job for the families and their friends. I will gladly praise your work to ALL who will hear my story.

God Bless You All!
Patti Harrell

Thank You In Advance!

To all the Patriot Guards,  I just want to say ahead of time,  Thank You from the bottom of my heart for coming to my dad's ( James Schells ) funeral at the National Cemetery this Friday. I cant begin to tell you what it means to me, or what it would mean to my dad. I have seen my dad weep openly over anything patriotic, he was a great man I am sure you would have loved him to.  Anyway Thank You so much!!  I am so grateful to all of you!!!

"Thank You" Twice

Dear Ken,

Thank you so much for organizing the escort for my brother Mike’s service on April 8. You organized the ride for my brother Kevin in Nov 2009 and now again for Mike. The service you and the Patriot Guard provide adds a dimension of honor and respect to the memorial and reminds everyone of the service our brothers provided to our country.  Their time in the military was long ago – they both were still in their teens when they joined – but those years in the Army and the Navy shaped the rest of their lives. They both would have been pleased and humbled by the tribute given to them by the PGR.

Thank you for your continued service to the grieving families of service members. This is not an easy day and age to so boldly proclaim one’s support of the military and I would imagine that you receive a fair amount of harassment.  Thank you for persevering in your commitment to honor our service men and women.

Christine Kelly

"And I just wanted to say thank you."

My name is Suzanne Welch Ratliff and I am the proud daughter, sister, aunt and mother of soldiers, past and present, in the United States Army.  And I just wanted to say thank you.

My nephew is 1st Lt. Robert F. Welch III.  The honor and protection you gave my nephew was without exception and greatly appreciated.

The PGR has been in my family's prayers many times.  Usually for patience in dealing with a "church" from Kansas.  The honor, patience and dignity you embody in dealing with your missions is above and beyond the service you take on voluntarily.  Thank you so, so much.

I remember being a little girl, and seeing "hippies" on TV,  throwing things, or yelling at soldiers like my dad.  I cannot thank you enough for your mission to protect my nephew, or my own sons from people who should be thanking them for their service, not reviling them in ignorance.

My father, CWO 4 Robert F. Welch, started his military service in WWII, also serving in Korea and more than 25 years in the US Army Reserves totaling 41 years.  He passed away in 1989 when Robby was 4 years old.

My brother, Lt. Col. Robert F. Welch II, served 28 years, active duty and reserves.  He swore my son Joseph,  into the Army shortly before he retired.

My oldest son Joseph, served 6 years in the Oklahoma National Guard, 45th Infantry Division.  He served one tour in Iraq.  His knees were torn up during basic, and he is waiting on the VA for desperately needed surgery.

My youngest son, PFC James Robert Cox will turn 21 on May 22, in Iraq.  He was unable to attend his cousin's funeral, something he bitterly regrets, but that was probably for the best.  Having to return to Iraq after a funeral for his cousin would be asking a lot.

I tell people, I have been in the Army every day of my life.   Losing Robby was harder than losing my parents, but the care and concern, combined with the dignity and respect your Riders show to him and my brother and his wife helped to ease some of the ache of loss.  That such a large group of people would give their time and hearts to us in our time of need was truly a blessing to be found at a time of loss and pain.

Thank you again for everything you did and the comfort you gave Bob and Barbara.

I continue to pray for your protection and for God's blessings to all of you.

Sincerely yours,

Suzanne R. Welch Ratliff

THANK YOU

Mr. Kammerer,

I was a friend of SSGT Jeremy Smith. He was a wonderful young man and he will be dearly missed. But, I wanted to make sure that you got a personal thank you from me. What ya’ll do is absolutely amazing. Ya’ll are by far and away the most caring and giving people I may have ever met. I’m sure hardly any one (if not none) of ya’ll knew him, but you gave your time and respect anyway.

It’s people like you that remind me why I am SO proud to be an American.

Words cannot express how grateful I am for wonderful people like you and your team. It made this hard time just a little easier. It showed that just because someone may not have known you doesn’t mean that you aren’t just as important.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you!

-Christie Aubel

THANK YOU

I just want to thank you for all that you do for military families. Its awesome and I can only imagine how much it means to the families. Thanks for protecting those families from the crazies that are out there.

MEDAL OF HONOR HOST CITY PARADE

Words are simply not adequate to express my sincere "thank you" to each of you! The parade could not have happened and been such a success if you had not played your part. Each year the event gets better and so do we with the preparations!

The organization, dedication, and adaptation you each exhibited Saturday showed your commitment to the MOH Recipients, and that is what we are all about.

I feel a bit humbled to be so blessed to work with so many talented, dedicated, and faithful people. I sincerely hope you know just how much I appreciate each of you whether you were an entrant in the parade or whether you worked to make it happen. I thank you for your time, talent, and hard work.

Respectfully,
Elaine McHorse, Chair
MOH Host City Parade Committee

THANK YOU

I want to thank you so much for your presence at my grandfather’s (J.L. Vanloon) funeral on 03/29/11.  This was a wonderful way to honor him and meant more than you know to the widow and family.  The impact you have with what you do touches people beyond words.  Thank you, again, with all of our hearts.

THANK YOU FROM MIKE MILLER'S FIANCE

I wanted to thank you and all the Patriot Guard Riders for standing guard at SPC Mike Miller's graveside service. Mike was very proud to be a veteran and a member of the PGR. He would be very honored to know how many of you came out for him. It was very touching to see so many flags lining the roads at the cemetery. As Mike's fiancé, I was extremely honored to be escorted to the service. It brought me comfort knowing I wouldn't be walking in alone. Mike and I talked about the PG many times. He was honored to be a part of your organization because it was "the right thing to do." Again, thank you to all of the wonderful Patriot Guard Riders that took off work, left their busy lives and were there to honor Mike because it was "the right thing to do".

Forever Grateful,
Danielle Sanders

Thank You From The Son Of Melvin Mageors

My family and I would like to show our appreciation to the Patriot Guardian Riders for what your group did for my Dad. When we topped the hill at DFW National Cemetery and saw all the flags and riders standing at attention at the pavilion, it was the most breath taking view I have ever seen. Your group's respect and effort really was heart felt from our family. Our Mom's reaction to what you did for our Dad and her Husband really made an impact on her and us that we will never forget.
Once again thank you very much and ya'll should all be proud for what you do for our soldiers and country.
This is what freedom is all about.

Thank you,
Tracy Mageors

A SNOWBALL EXPRESS "SITUATION"

I really want you to know about a little situation that has come up in my family. My 9 year old Snowball Express son will not take off his Patriot Guard Rider wrist band. I can't even talk him into it when he takes a shower. It has been a few months since Snowball Express and he hasn't forgotten the way you all treated them. He is a fan for life.

I will continue to work on getting the band off for awhile, but just wanted to share this with you and again say thank you. You are an amazing group of people and they might not always say it, but the kids know this too.

Thanks Again

A Very Nice Thank You From The Wife Of Pvt. Brian Dickson

I recently laid to rest my husband of 29 years and best friend of 55 years.  It was the most difficult thing I have ever had to do in my life.  In contacting an old friend of his I learned of your wonderful organization.  I contacted the North Texas chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders and was directed to their website.  I filed out the request form for their presence.  I was then contacted by Ride Captain, Bruce Lowe.  I cannot tell you how wonderful my experience was.  Bruce was so compassionate, respectful, and understanding.  I could go on and on about how I was treated by this marvelous representative!  He was so helpful in every aspect.  Due to bad weather I had to postpone the funeral.  Brian's funeral was moved from February 4, 2011 to February 11, 2011.  The Patriot Guard Riders were so flexible and so easy to talk to during this horrible time.

When I arrived at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery on February 11th at 2:00PM I was met by Bruce Lowe, Ride Captain.  He introduced himself and again paid his respects and expressed his sympathy for my loss.  He led the procession to the pavilion where the service was held.  I had no idea what to expect.  As we came around the curve leading to the pavilion the first thing I saw was flags... lots of flags.  It was a very humbling site.  The temperature was in the forties and the sun was shining so bright.  There was a slight breeze and all those flags were waving gallantly as the Patriot Guard line stood at attention along both sides of the walkway leading to the pavilion.  It was such a beautiful site it immediately made me burst into tears.  These wonderful men and women were here to honor my husband, and they didn't even know him.  It was such an awesome sight.  All during the service they stood in line surrounding me, my family, and friends.  It was like being held in the arms of love.  After the Honor Guard played Taps the flag was presented to me.  After the flag was presented Bruce (Ride Captain) knelt in front of me and presented me with a plaque from the Patriot Guard Riders.  This was unexpected and again the tears flowed freely.

After the service I went to personally shake the hand of and thank each and every one of these wonderful people.  There were too many to thank in the short time I had.  Everyone of them I did have the honor to thank told me it was their honor to do what they were doing, and everyone of them thanked me for the opportunity to be there to show their respect!  They had it backwards, I thought.  It was our honor to have them!  They were nothing short of reverent, respectful, and sincere.  Everyone who attended the funeral commented on how beautiful it was.  They all commented on the beauty of pulling up to the pavilion and seeing all those flags and all those riders standing at attention, proud and tall.  Brian's service would have been nice without the Patriot Guard Riders in attendance, but their attendance made it so much more.  It was truly beautiful and I believe it was all due to those wonderful men and women who gave of themselves in the name of freedom.  I cannot think of a better way of saying good bye to my dear, sweet Brian than with these honorable people there.  Your presence made a lasting impression and created my most fond memory of the day he was laid to rest.  I will NEVER forget the site of those flags as we rounded the curve leading to the pavilion.

Thank you and your organization.  It was a privilege to have you there and to be on the receiving end of your love for your fellow veteran.  Your heroes made my hero's funeral special.  Ride on, Brothers.  Ride on, protected by the hands of God.

Sincerely,
Ruth Dickson

THANK YOU FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF
THE JOINT SERVICES HONOR GUARD

PGR!
I wanted to extend a quick note of appreciation from the men & women of the 7th Bomb Wing for the outstanding support that your organization showed to us during the Dennany/Tucci event.

The members of the North Texas Patriot Guard are a huge asset to the military funeral honors mission in DFW. I could not imagine our mission without the coordination and participation of your team.

I wished that there was not a requirement to bury our nations veterans but reality say's otherwise.

I hope that we continue to work together, strengthen our bonds and develop a seamless team effort in all future details.

The Air Force Core values are: Integrity first, Service before Self and Excellence in all we do........Standards that are all exceeded by the PGR and its membership.

Please pass along our sincere appreciation and respect to your members. May God bless us all.

AN UNSOLICITED COMMENT FROM AN OBSERVER

This morning on 635 in Dallas I saw your flags flying during a funeral procession and had never heard of your organization.  I wondered who the funeral was for so I went to your website for those two reasons.  I am so glad that I did.  I would have never known who the procession was for or who to pray for or thank.  I also would have never known what a wonderful thing you organization does.  I personally want to say thank you for all that you do.  I have posted on FB what I saw this morning and I hope it drives people to your website and I hope they give to a great organization with a great cause.

Blessings to you all,

LaTresa Wilson

From Austin Staggs' Grandmother

There are not enough words to express what your presence meant to us from the time PFC Austin Staggs was taken off the plane until after the burial took place.

The flags that were held by you in the cold and wind outside of the church, then the many patriot guard riders that were in the procession from Weatherford to Mt Olivet cemetery in Fort Worth and then all the flags that were held at the gravesite. He truly was honored as an American Hero. God bless all of you.

Sincerely,

SNOWBALL EXPRESS V

My son's English Class teacher asked him to present a story and illustration to his class so that they might learn about his history and why he was missing school. Below is the letter that my son wrote to present to his class.

My Adventure with Snowball Express

By: Cameron Santos-Silva

I attended an event called snowball express. The mission statement was bringing families together. The reasons for this event are for families to come together who lost a parent in the military. This relates to me, because my dad Sergeant First Class Carlos Santos-Silva, was a platoon sergeant that managed 42 soldiers in the United States Army. My dad had deployed to Kosovo once, Iraq twice, and once to Afghanistan. My dad left September 1st, 2009 and that was the last time I ever saw him. March 22, 2010 that was the date my dad was killed in action. He was riding in a truck when the Taliban detonated an IED (Improvised Explosive Device), while he was in the truck and other soldiers were injured.

I was living at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina at the time when this happened. Because this happened to my dad, I was invited to Snowball Express in Dallas, Texas. Many people showed their support to the military by volunteering, donations, and organizations allowing different activities for us to do with our other parent. There were over 1100 hundred survivors of moms, dads, and children from all branches of the military service.

Snowball Express knows how hard the holidays are without a parent. I got to meet a lot of people who understand me. They provided a lot of activities for all of us. They had opening ceremonies with dirt bike racers and Rocket Man. After, that we saw the nutcracker in Arlington, Texas and after the nutcracker we went to a rodeo. The next day we went to six flags. The last day they had a big performance for us with dinner and a magic show it was nice. Snowball express also had a chill zone for the older kids. Snowballs express treated us well and let us treat them like their part of our own family.

I now visit my dad in Arlington, VA where he is buried. My mom and I take the Metro system there to visit him whenever we want too. It has been eight months since my dad passed away; I love him and still talk to him and know he is still watching over me.

Cameron Santos-Silva is 12 years old and in 6th grade.

Thank-you for your hard work and commit to allow us to cherish this time during the holiday season.

Sincerely,
Kristen Santos-Silva
Gold Star Spouse to SFC Carlos Santos-Silva, KIA March 22, 2010

From The Family Of Eric Heebner

The family of Eric R. Heebner, U. S. Military Lt. Commander (ret) deeply appreciates the North Texas Patriot Guard for the most heart felt display and comfort provided at the funeral held at DFW Cemetery on December 14, 2010.  Our family highly respects the work you do for our veterans and the time you spend to make a painful time for a family protected and honorable.  God bless all of you.

The family of Eric R. Heebner

From Guyer High School In Denton

We have been building our Veteran’s Day events from the day our school opened.  We started with 34 cadets out at the flag pole with almost no audience five years ago.  Other than the addition of a few cadets and staff members to watch, it stayed just about like that for three more years.

Fortunately, the Tuckers are members of your group and Phyllis worked at our school so she managed to get the riders involved last year.  The addition of all the flags your folks put out in front of the school make such an incredible difference for our exposure to all those that drive by or are dropping off their kids.  We now have people that were just driving by, instead elect to be late to work so they can be a part of our celebration because of the fanfare from having the Patriot Guard here.

Mostly to say “thanks” to the Patriot Guard we added breakfast this year.  We hoped for 40-50 and purchased food for 75 guests… we had 70 vets eat with us!  Once again, this is mostly due to the participation of the Patriot Guard.

It was totally voluntary for students to arrive early to chat with the Patriot Guard during the breakfast.  I expected 3-4 students would arrive at school in uniform 45 minutes early just to chat.  I was so proud that we had over 30 students ask their parents to get them to school early (much earlier than the buses run) so they could meet the veterans of our area.  I truly believe get-togethers like this are exactly why Veteran’s Day exists.  It is one thing to view a short ceremony, but a whole different level of educating our children when we sit at breakfast together so one group can educate and kids can say “thanks” – because that want to be there.

As the school year begins next year we will again submit a request for your organization to join us…thanks for everything you do!

 Respectfully,
Lt Col (ret) Blake Fentress & SMSgt (ret) Fred Ham

A Thank You From The Snowball Express

December 15, 2010

The sunbeam of Snowball Express has left the Dallas Community for this year, but the sunshine of our volunteer’s soft hearts and dedicated efforts to the children of Snowball Express will last forever. It is not about the reward you receive or the recognition you might harvest – you gave your service freely to our families to insure they knew Snowball Express cares now and always.

Our appreciation for your time, your caring, and your dedication to the Snowball Express families have given us the ability to continue to grow the Snowball Express organization. We could not have accomplished this event without all of you.

Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Thank you Volunteers for helping to change the holiday season for all of our Snowball Express families. With gratitude,

A Thank You From A Snowball Express Mom

There are no words to express my gratitude. You were out there in the cold from the beginning to the end.  You made the Snowball Express kids feel so important and this mom thanks you from the bottom of my hear

Veterans Day THANK YOU From Forestwood Middle School

The purpose of this letter is to express the gratitude of the entire Forestwood Middle School community to you for your recent generosity in contributing time and resources in support of our Veterans' Day Program; the presence of The Patriot Guard Riders adds a dimension to our program that we could not provide in any other fashion. This contribution directly benefitted the students in our school and has had an immediate impact on the learning climate. It is the involvement of community partners such as The PGR that supports the “three legged stool” that is education in the modern world; the legs consist of educators, students, and parents & community. Without one of these legs the stool will not stand.

“Thank you” truly seems inadequate in attempting to relate exactly what your involvement means to our staff and students, or in describing the influence this gesture had on the atmosphere of our school. It is with the aid of persons such as yourselves that Forestwood Middle School will be able to continue to strive for the quality and success our students so richly deserve, and as a direct result ensure a bright future for our nation. Please be assured of the heartfelt gratitude from our educational community.

With deepest appreciation,
David W. Tickner
Principal

FROM THE ARLINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH

Believe me when I say that WE are the ones who were honored by YOUR presence on Sunday. I remember pulling up and seeing you all here and my heart immediately became heavy. What you all have done for our country in serving and now for the time you devote to causes such as this means so much to people like myself and my family. Thank you for your patriotism and love for our blessed United States of America.

God bless you and yours,
Cathy Hailey

A THANK YOU FROM McKINNEY

I wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to you and to all of the other Patriot Guard Rider members for doing what you do ! PFC Cody Board, the service you held today, Saturday, October 16th, was a very close friend of my daughter’s. They attended and graduated high school together just a short year ago. I also have a son-in-law currently serving in Afghanistan, and a son currently in the NAVY that will be out on the seas in just a couple of weeks; it is an awesome sight to see your group at these funeral services to honor these military heroes. I’m sure you don’t get told near often enough what a blessing it is to have a team of people that put such forth an effort to show their respect for a fallen hero - so, again; THANK YOU FROM MY HEART.

I was unable to attend the actual funeral because of work but I did take a long lunch break and drove straight to where the procession would be passing. I stood on the side of the road along with quite a few others and I literally cried the entire time. I cried for Cody’s family but just as much for the pure joy and warmth it brings me to see a group such as yours do something so admirable for not only this soldier but for all of them.

Although I have no military background, nor does anyone from my immediate family; I have always had such a huge respect for every member of the military. I always wanted to join but having my Mother pass away when I was 16, changed my life plans drastically. I cannot honestly say I know the true feeling of what it’s like to have lost a service person, but I can certainly feel the pain in my heart for all the rest of those that have.

I’m sorry to ramble on but I just can’t put in to words the sincerest THANKS that I’m trying to relay to you . Thanks for what you do.

Regards,
Faith Powless

A THANK YOU TO EAST TEXAS PGR

Steve Hirtzel and I work together here at Lockheed Martin. We often talked regarding our fathers and he was kind enough to share his Patriot Guard service experiences and encouraged our family to allow the PGRs an opportunity to honor our dad.

On behalf of the family of Jack Richard Arrington, we would like to extend our sincere and humble gratitude for the services rendered by the East Texas Patriot Guard Riders on October 6th, 2010. There at the Enoch cemetery, stood about 25 of the most wonderful men and women we could imagine. Words just do not express adequately how the sight of these caring individuals helped in so many ways heal our hearts. We understand and greatly respect the PGR’s commitment to their country; that those who served this great nation are NEVER forgotten. It was an honor being a part of such a wonderful mission. We just wanted to somehow ‘thank’ all those who rode in memory of our beloved dad. We know he was looking down from on High in total awe and amazement of the entire proceedings. Daddy was a simple man and would have loved to shake the hands and hug all who were present. Our prayer is that the riders felt his love in some small way that day.

God Bless -  and THANK YOU AGAIN.
Kay, Pam, and Scott Arrington

A THANK YOU FROM A FEBRUARY MISSION

First of all I want to apologize for my delay in getting this out to your organization. In all of the events surrounding my fathers passing it completely slipped my mind.

Tonight, Oct. 12, 2010, I am watching the Rangers/Rays game 5 play off game. My dad was an umpire for over 30 years. I made a comment to my wife how much my dad would have loved calling this game because the pitching is outstanding. This in turn led me back to your website to look again at the amazing tribute your organization provided for my dad that freezing cold February day. We have pictures of the motorcycles with their flags heading down hwy. 75 to the grave site. It was a site that will forever be etched in my memory. I also was literally speechless when my dad's casket was rolled out of the church and your entire group stood at attention saluting my father. If he were alive to see this he would have come up and hugged each of you in only the way he could do it. Very strong and full of gratitude. Dad never really talked much about his service in the Korean War. He often felt that his service was forgotten or passed over by our country. He gave his blood to serve his country and was very proud of what he did. The way you all honored him gave him the respect he so justly deserved for his service to our country.

I cannot say enough how grateful I am for what you all did. May God continue to bless your organization as you continue to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

Son of Al Alford, Korean War Veteran, 2x Purple Heart recipient

THANK YOU!

Just wanted to Thank all of the Patriot Guard members.

We are very proud of what you do.

If the rest of us who are not members can do anything to help, especially against the protesters at the funerals, find a way to let us know.

Thanks again,

Darrell & Susan Johnson

A Unique Thank You To The PGR.

My name is Jeremy Callahan. I'm a 21 year old college senior who enlisted in the Infantry and is now going through Texas Christian University's Army ROTC program so I can get my commission. I've never had an opportunity to interact with your organization, but today I had the honor.

Today at around noon I was cruising in the slow lane on I20 Eastbound in Fort Worth. I was driving my Jeep, topless and door-less with a leg propped out on the rocker guard. I was in my ACU's headed to get some work done. Out of nowhere, two motorcycles come up on my left; one snaps a salute and the other a thumbs up. They pull up in front of me and "escorted" me down the highway till I got to my exit.

It sent shivers down my spine...

Your organization is something else, guys and girls out there that do what you do, honoring our fallen with the utmost respect.

God Bless, Stay Safe, and Thank You!

(VMERG) Veteran Military Employee Resource Group

As the National Vice President of the VMERG at AMR I want to whole heartedly thank everyone for the dignity and respect that was shown by all to this young Airman. I witnessed Patriot Guard Riders, USO Volunteers, VMERG members and AA employees that just took a few minutes of their time to pay respect to a young man who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and country. Also I do not want to forget the Fleet Service Clerks (FSC) who unloaded & loaded & this young man onto the plane, I saw one of these FSC’s say a quick prayer as he finished his Job. Many years ago; as a FSC myself I remember doing that same thing, handling those caskets (AKA -Jim Wilson’ -as know by our industry) can be very emotional. A special thanks to that guy who took time to wish our Airman a safe journey home to a family who will miss him dearly. There are times that we all take for granted our busy lives, I will remember Airman Edwards for the rest of my life for reminding me to that life is fragile.

Finally, I gave his escort two challenge coins to pass along to his family on behalf of (1) American Airlines Veterans Initiatives’ and (1) AA VMERG. As well I gave the escort one for himself to keep as a token of gratitude & admiration from our DFW/AFW area employees for his ensuring that Airman Edwards makes a safe journey home.

Thanks to everyone of you. Respectfully, Thom Lee

FROM THE MIKE HAISAN MISSION

I wanted to take a moment and let you know how honored my family was to have the Patriot Guard at my stepfather's services.

I had emailed you last week in regards to Mr. Mike Haisan and his services. I was very impressed at the quick response I received. Mr. John had called me within 2 hours and between your organization and Mr. John, he already had all the information needed. This made our experience even easier, all the tough questions already had answers to them, and it was one less thing me and my family had to worry about.

There was never a doubt in my mind that the Patriot Guard would come through for us, but their service cannot be matched. I only expected your organization to ride with us to the cemetery. However, the Patriot Guard was actually at the funeral home even before the family, held the door open for each person entering and leaving the funeral home, took pictures, and so much more.

I also remember the respect each rider gave to each other. However, one rider in particular stood out. I do not know his name, but I will never forget his act. As our procession pulled into lane A at the cemetery, there was already a procession in lane C. As lane C began to process to their shelter, this particular rider stood in the median under a tree and saluted the family and friends of the deceased until all cars has passed. This gentleman made a big impression on me and it means a lot knowing there are people out there that will take the time to honor our vets.

Again, thank you for the services your organization provided for my family. If there is anything I can do to help your organization by a donation of my time, please do not hesitate to ask, it would be my honor.

DUSTIN THOMAS WILEY

On Saturday, August 14th, Patriot Guard Riders from the Beaumont, Texas, area along with the US Coast Guard, escorted the body of my nephew, Dustin Thomas Wiley from Beaumont to Ennis, Texas. From Ennis, the Dallas Patriot Guard picked up the escort and the Beaumont riders turned back for the long ride back home. The Dallas riders continued the escort through Dallas to the funeral home in Denton, Texas.

During visitation on Saturday evening, I spent quite a bit of time watching the PRG riders setting up American flags in front of the funeral home at the street and by the building entrance. In 108 degree Texas heat (with high humidity) they stood in formation with the flags and at the front door, opening and holding it for those arriving at visitation.

On Sunday, August 15th for the funeral service itself, the riders repeated the process of the previous day and then lined up to escort the procession to the cemetery in Krum, Texas. When we arrived at the cemetery, the flags had already been placed surrounding the grave site and the riders again stood sentry for the military graveside service. At the end, the PGR presented my nephew's wife Leslie, also a member of the US Coast Guard, with a framed remembrance and thanked her for the opportunity to have honored him.

I told one of the riders on Saturday that I, as did the rest of Dustin's family and friends, very much appreciated the PGR efforts to which I received the reply that, "We are honored to have served him."

For the most part I was able to deal with Dustin's death without breaking down but I found myself doing so as I watched what the riders, who did not know Dustin or the Wiley family personally, did in his honor. At a time that so many in our country have lost their sense of patriotism, support for our military and a love of country, I found it very moving.

Each and every individual that took part in that escort ride, including the support team, have my undying respect and gratitude along with that of the Wiley family. I consider the Patriot Guard Riders to be one of the most honorable and patriotic groups I have heard of.

Please pass this along to those that participated and supported this effort.

Sincerely,
Randy A Wiley

THE LOST BATTALION

WE HAVE CONTACTED YOU ALL FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS AND YOU HAVE HONORED US WITH YOUR PRESENCE.  WE WANT TO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.  THESE GREAT WWII HEROES DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF RESPECT.  THERE ARE NOT VERY MANY LEFT.  BUT THAT HAS NOT STOPPED YOU “HEROES” FROM COMING TO SUPPORT THEM.  JOE AND I OWE YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP.  THE VETS, WIVES AND WIDOWS LOOK SO FORWARD TO SEEING YOU EACH YEAR AND WE EVEN HEAR COMMENTS FROM OTHER HOTEL GUESTS.  WE SIGNED UP YESTERDAY TO JOIN YOU ALL WHENEVER WE CAN.  WE RESPECT WHAT YOU DO SO VERY MUCH.  I CANNOT SAY THANK YOU IN ENOUGH WAYS.  HOPING TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.  AND BY THE WAY, THE HOTEL AND WE WOULD LIKE TO INVITE YOU TO COME FOR MORE THAN THE SATURDAY FESTIVITIES.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION AS IT GETS CLOSER----JUST EMAIL US.  JOE AND PAT CADENHEAD  SRCHIEF1995@EARTHLINK.NET

Please give my thanks to your members who are participating in the memorial service at the Lost Battalion reunion this weekend. My dad, Nolan Anthony, who died last year at the age of 91 was a member of the Lost Battalion, so I have attended many of their reunions. I have seen that group of men go from a large crowd of rowdy young men to a very small group of proud old gentlemen. I've always considered it a privilege to listen to their stories about the time they spent in service to their country. There were two points I always marveled at. First, they never considered themselves heroes, they always just thought they were simply doing what had to be done. Secondly, after the horrors they faced, it was amazing to me that those men seemed to remember only the positive moments and shared so much laughter about such a difficult time; they were a strong bunch of men.

Your members have my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for honoring this group of almost forgotten heroes. The men of the 131st Field Artillery, the men of the USS Houston, and their Dutch comrades from the HMS Perth have always been my heroes. Please pass my thanks along to your members who are willing to take time from their busy lives to honor my friends and heroes of the Lost Battalion!

With thanks and utmost respect,
Nola Anthony Factor

Gentlemen,

I want to Thank your group for taking the time to salute these WWII vets. My Uncle, Luther Prunty is one of the last remaining survivors of the Lost Battalion, Luther will be 100 on Jan. 11, 2011. I know that this means so much to him and Dorothy his wife (my Aunt), and his daughters Gail Prunty Bialias and Marsha Prunty Canwright his daughters (my cousins) and his brothers in arms that have gone to their reward. He is well aware that his earthly time is short, but God willing he will be at the reunion in 2011.

FROM THE BROTHER OF SGT. ALAN KESLER

I want to give a heartfelt thanks to you and all of the Patriot Guard Riders for your kind participation in my brother's funeral in Irving and later the DFW Veteran's Cemetery on Tuesday, August 10, 2010. My daughter and I traveled from Mississippi for the funeral. It was an inspiring sight to see the many flags at the funeral home and you fine gentlemen standing guard for Alan and his family. The motorcade was awesome as evidenced by the many vehicles yielding in respect as I believe nearly everyone knows on sight of your bikes and flags that a veteran is being taken to his final rest. It certainly helped me deal with a difficult day much easier.

You have the gratitude of me and all of my family.

FROM A VERY SPECIAL COUPLE

To my fellow PGR members,

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for honoring my son-in-law Lance Dudley at his memorial service August 4, 2010.  I have attended many funerals as a member of Patriot Guard and can’t find words to express how very important what you do is to the families.

It really is extremely difficult to put into words how it makes you feel to arrive at the service with the flags lining the entrance to the church in honor of a loved one .

Lance didn’t get to attend too many missions but he did when possible to get off work.  He was very proud to be a Patriot Guard Rider and wore the colors with pride.

Please express my gratitude to each one who rode and stood proudly to honor Lance.  It was most appreciated and will be remembered by his entire family.

TOURNAMENT OF HEROS

Yesterday as I watched the last soldier climb out of my car and walk away with his wheelchair and cane to fly back to his life, I was again humbled.

"Thank you mam for all you did to give us this awesome weekend", he said as he walked away.

Words are not adequate to express my gratitude for your participation in A Tournament of Heroes. Without the generosity of our  sponsors and dedication of our volunteers, this event wouldn't have been possible.   I have already received numerous thank you's from our soldiers and want you to know how much they appreciate your time and efforts.

We are posting photos and video on Facebook, Let's Go Outdoors Texas page for your enjoyment.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you,

FROM THE RECENT SNOWBALL EXPRESS MISSION IN EAST TEXAS

This note is from Mrs. Malone. Her husband, Jimy Malone was one of our missions about three years ago in Wells Point.

I just wanted to thank you for an amazing day on Saturday, July 10, in Palestine.  The last time I had the privilege of seeing the Patriot Guard Riders, it was an incredibly sad day.  I can now say that we have such happy memories of fellowshipping with this incredible organization.  Reagan had a such a great time and certainly felt like the center of attention all day.  Because we live in a rural community, it is rare that we are able to get together with other families in our situation and we treasured Saturday.  We often forget that we do more to honor our hero with smiles than tears, and your organization was a great part of reminding us.  We may have lost Jimy, but we are so blessed to have gained such an incredible extended family.  If possible, please pass on our appreciation to those that participated in such an amazing event.

Thanks again,

Leslie Malone

From the family of Clarence M. Lambert

Please accept this attempt to express our love, gratitude and appreciation for what you have given our family. Being a family of Patriot Guard members it was difficult for each of us to be on the inside of a circle of friends and flags. The honor you bestowed on my father and our family was well beyond what words can express. In the past we have listened as families have tried to express just how much it meant to them to see the honor you show.  Each of us now has a better understanding of just what those families were trying to say. The spoken language cannot communicate the feeling of honor and respect we hold for each rider and for what you do. Having our heart tugged in two directions at one time, we all felt the pain of grief in the loss of my Dad but also felt the swelling of pride in knowing that the people with those flags were also our friends. The unselfish love, honor that each of you demonstrated to my Dad, the family and to the community was recognized by all in attendance. Thank you and May God Bless each of you.

FROM THE MOTHER AND FAMILY OF SGT. ZACHERY JOE WALTERS

I cannot tell you all enough, how much it meant to me and my family, the respect and honor that you gave to an “unknown” fallen soldier. Zach was a wonderful young man who would have been extremely embarrassed by honor and respect that was shown to him by the organization and execution of his homecoming from Dover and his funeral procession.

Looking back over the videos, it was not lost on me the expression of your patriotism and support of our military. This unfortunate war has taken too many of our children’s lives or limbs and we need to keep all of them in our thoughts and prayers.

I will forever be indebted to you for making the most bittersweet day of my life one that will be fondly remembered by your show of respect and honor for my “baby” USMC Sgt. Zachary Joe Walters.

I think we did him proud.

Again, thank you all for your kindnesses and expressions of sympathy and condolences. I thank each and every one of you who take your personal time to come together to honor our fallen heroes.

Keep up the good and necessary work of reminding the public of the sacrifices of our military.

As you know so well, freedom is not free. Thank you for your individual service and sacrifice to this country and how you continue to serve.

Your patriotism, respect for our military, and love for this country overwhelm me.

Best Regards,
Regina M. Walters and family.

Sgt. Zachary J. Walters KIA - Afghanistan

Hello:

We are high school friends of Zachary's grandparents, Bobbie and Joe Walters and have known Kelly Walters, Zach's dad and Zach since they were born. We were at the funeral service for him and were so impressed by the patriotism shown by everyone, the Patriot Riders, Police and Firemen and just people on the street. There are some Patriotic Americans left, after all!!! It was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful young man that spent part of his re-sign up bonus on buying his men new protective gear. What a blessing! Anyway, I want to thank all of you for riding for Zach and other young men and women who are killed fighting for this war. We salute and thank each and every one of you.

Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Robert and Libby Dixon

"THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE" FROM AN ARMY WIFE

I would like to thank you for being there for my Military.

My husband is an Army Soldier, and should anything happen to him, I know that I can call on you and your family for his honor.

My husband is a proud Texan (Dennison, TX), and his Grandfather was also military (Retired Army First Sergeant)

My family has a military background as well. (Father - Retired Navy).

When all of the protests first started, I was terrified! My husband was serving in Iraq at that time, and has since done 2 more tours there. He is now getting ready for Afghanistan.

We are lucky in the respect that he is a Texan, and I believe it is now illegal for people to do the things at funerals that they once did. Though I am not completely positive.

I respect other's rights to protest what they feel is not right, but I do not believe that other's have the right to cause anyone pain in their search for their opinions.

Thank you for being there. As an Army wife, you have given me the ability to breath easier.

Bright Blessings,
Margaret Pritchett

FROM AN ACTIVE DUTY PATRIOT

I'm a soldier from First Cavalry Division.. I was watching videos of the Patriot Guard, protecting our families from the Westboro Baptist Church.. I have the utmost respect for you men and women who, after we guard you in life, you guard us in death. Thank you, so very much, for paying your respects to our families, friends, and loved ones when our time on this Earth is over. Words can hardly explain the emotions I felt, seeing all those American flags, held high, proudly, by some of the most honorable men that aren't even in the military.. It means a lot to us, and our families. And we will never forget your patronage and respect. What you guys do truly is amazing, for the nation that forgets it's defenders will itself be forgotten, and America will only remain the Land of the Free so long as it is the Home of the Brave.

Much Love and Respect,

A THANK YOU FROM FEBRUARY

Re:  Funeral for Robert Payette

Just wanted to say how much we appreciated all you did for the Payette funeral, back in
February in the major snow storm. Your spirit shined thru such a moment of emotional
time. We have many family members who have served our country and it gives such
warm fuzzies to know there are people out there who continue to care for those have
served with gestures such as yours, and from the heart.

Thank you.....thank you....thank you for all you have done and continue to do.

Blessings,
Gary and Barbara Brock

A THANK YOU NOTE FROM THE MOTHER OF SEAN DURAN

I just wanted to thank you and all the PGR for standing in at Sean's service in Dallas.  It was very, very moving to hear the bell toll for Sean as we walked up to the seating area.  Being saluted as we drove in was quite an honor.  I am very glad you and your fellow riders were there, it made the ceremony very special to see all the flags.  I will always remember and I hope to be able to "pay it forward" and become part of the PGR back in Utah.

Lisa

THANK YOU FROM THE VASQUEZ FAMILY

I just wanted to take a minute to thank the Patriot Guard Riders for your services and respectful presence at my cousin's service yesterday.  We all really appreciated it, especially his sons, Jeremy 23 and Jacob 12, who share his love of country and Harley's.  The cemetery rushes you through and in our state of mind I feel maybe our gratitude wasn't expressed.  I do apologize for that and please share our heartfelt thanks for all you do.  If we here in OKC can ever be of services don't hesitate to call on us.

Sincerely,

Re: Dennis McVey - DFW National Cemetery, March 15

Words cannot ever begin to express my gratitude for what you did for Dennis. As I had arrived early to the funeral home to go over last minute details. Some of the riders were already there. I sat in my car and cried upon seeing them there before me! I will never be able to thank you enough and tell you how much I sincerely appreciate what you do!  My father was in the Navy, a Korean Veteran and I could only imagine how proud he would of been to see this. He to is buried at the DFW National Cemetery. But for me, just knowing Dennis did not have any immediate family you guys filled that void. He was my Teamster Brother and friend and will be sorely missed. I would also like to thank one of your riders Larry Maddux, whom I work with. He provided us with the information to get this rolling. Larry Maddux has changed my life by bringing this group of awesome people to my attention. I will NEVER be the same!!  Thank you Larry, and a sincere thanks to The Patriot Guard Riders.  Wow........Priceless..............

FROM A FRIEND OF SEAN CAUGHMAN

I can't thank you enough for your service and selflessness portrayed at Petty Officer Caughman's service Friday, 26 February.

I was one of Sean's friends. I met him while still enlisted and serving with the Seabees. I had the honor of meeting a few of you, but was unable to meet you all.

I was hoping to get copies of all the pictures taken at Sean's service at the DFW VA cemetery. Of note, I am interested in one someone took of me saluting or standing at parade rest.

If you would do me this honor, I would be most grateful.

 Very respectfully,

FROM THE WIFE OF 'BOBBY' PAYETTE

02/16/2010

My family & I have only the highest praise for the Patriot Guard Riders Organization and their dedication to honoring the men of the military.  Especially the men that participated in the funeral service for my husband, Robert A. 'Bobby' Payette on Feb 12th, 2010, one of the 2 biggest snow days in North Texas.  Not only did they provide escort service, but went above & beyond the call of duty by shoveling the sidewalks at the Arlington Baptist Church & the DFW National Cemetery-Dallas.

They gave such a measure of dignity & respect with their reverence & flags.  Also they took pictures of everything, mostly things that I would have missed had I not been able to look back on them on the website.  I am most thankful for this group and what you do.

God Bless your group and your mission.  I will be telling everyone about you for many years to come.  Thank you again,

L'Barb

A SINCERE THANK YOU

Thank you so much for honoring the family of Al Alford with your presence.  I have gone to and worked many funerals where the Patriot Guard has been and can never find words to express how very important what you do is for families of service men!

Please accept my heartfelt gratitude to each one who rode and stood proudly to honor another.   You are most appreciated.  What you do greatly impacts the family and friends who gather.

FROM THE FAMILY OF LESTER WALTERS

To all the WONDERFUL Patriot Guard Riders

The Family of Lester A Walters would like to express our deep and sincere appreciation for your kindness, caring words and dedication.

We can honestly say that we have never meant a more wonderful group of people.   Your presence and tribute at the Memorial Service and the Internment will forever be remembered in our hearts along with the man we love beyond words.

What you have done for our family has made the loss  a little more bearable.  When we arrived at the pavilion, and saw all the wonderful PGR 's we were speechless.  Your salute to my father had me in tears.  I just can not express enough how you have impacted my heart.  I have never seen so much love and caring from one stranger to another as you all gave to us.

You do this for your fellow Vet's, and we understand your commitment for them, but what you did for our family was above all our expectations . I commend each and everyone of you for the weather that you endured during this time.

Please know that we will never forget any of you and will always hold you close and dear in our hearts.

I know Dad is riding his white Harley and flying the flag in heaven, waiting to thank you himself.

Sincerely,
Pat Walters

"THANK YOU" FROM SISTER OF JAMES McRIGHT

On January 23rd my brother, James William (Bill) McRight, was honored with an escort (even in the rain) and flag line.  Your presence at his service touched us all and we want you to know we appreciate the time and attention in planning and executing this mission at the request of Don “Pappy” Papin (Oklahoma State Captain.)  Thanks to all who PGR participated from Bill’s mother Jean, his sisters Michelle and Maureen, his mother in law Rose Marie and his wife Michele.

A THANK YOU NOTE FROM THE DAUGHTER OF CPO STERLING HORNSBY

Hello, Dewey

I just came across the "Final Itinerary" for my father, CPO Sterling L. Hornsby.  On behalf of my mother, sister, brother, and all our extended family, I want to thank you and your fellow PGR for the fine sendoff you gave my dad on Jan. 4.  He was so proud to have served his country, and always supported the military in any way he could. Thank you for honoring him and all the other servicemen and women.

Sincerely,
Shirley (Hornsby) Wetzel

A THANK YOU NOTE FROM THE SON OF HAROLD JOHNSTON

On behalf of the entire family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. There are no words for how we felt seeing such an large group of PGR heroes standing tall and silent. The support was strong and immediate, it carried my mother as if she had wings. We just couldn't believe how many showed for Dad's service!

What you guys are doing is something I have decided to become part of in northeast Oklahoma as soon as I relocate. If I can pay it forward in some small degree, then I will.
I could go on and on, but more words will not say it any better. Thank you . Thank you. God bless you all.

US Army's 418th Military Police Reserve Company Send Off

Our send off went well yesterday morning. It was 13 degrees here when I pulled out, but I had enough clothes on it really wasn't bad at all. I had 3 other brave souls on bikes that rode escort with me and we had a dozen or so waiting at the church gym with flags. And at the end of the ceremony the bird colonel spoke to us and told us how much the military appreciated the PGR and then he came out to where we were standing around the walls with our flags and shook all of our hands and pinned a black and gold US Army pin on every one of us.

THANK YOU FROM THE MOTHER AND FATHER OF L CPL ROBERT "TYLER" AUSTIN

10/20/2009

My husband Rob and I want to thank you again for honoring our son, L Cpl Robert "Tyler" Austin Saturday on the way to the airport, Sunday for the Viewing and again on Monday for the funeral.

It meant so very much to us to have you all there and to talk to people that had been through what we are going through now.

Tyler loved bikes and cars, he wanted to have his own garage one day...he would have loved seeing all the bikes.

There was one woman there, I think she was PGR...she had blonde hair and a black leather jacket on I think...she told me that she had lost her son in June, and told me that she left her number for me if I ever needed someone to talk to who knew what I was going through. I know her pain has to be so fresh still too...and it just touched my heart so to have her offer that to me. I can't remember her name, things were a bit of a blur. I couldn't find the number however, if anyone knows who she is please tell her how much her offer touched my heart, especially since I know she is going through so much as well with her recent loss.

The kindness of strangers just amazes me to no end. You all were so nice and I had so many many riders come up to offer condolences and hugs and words of strength, it was overwhelming, to see so many who didn't even know us, who cared SO much.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, you helped make this difficult time a little easier, and I know Ty would have thought it was just awesome if he was here.

I know my husband wants to get a bike, and he was a Navy sonar tech...I would love to be able to do this for others when he gets his bike, and I think he would too...

People too often take for granted the freedoms they enjoy each and every day in this country, and forget how many people sacrifice things and even their lives to ensure those freedoms, people like you restore my faith in America.

I would also like to thank those of you who are veterans or had family members who are veterans or fallen soldiers...thank you for your service to this country, thank you for the sacrifices that you and yours have made to ensure our freedoms and rights in this country, you are amazing.

We responded with a message of condolences, thanking them for allowing us to participate in honoring their son, and inviting them to join us in future missions even before they get a bike.  We asked for permission to publish their comments and received this response:

That's perfectly fine...my thank you is for ALL the Patriot Guard...after having you all do this to honor our son, I know what it must mean to other families that you have honored and will honor this way too...you all are just awesome.

And by all means, you have my permission to post mine and Robs contact info I sent you as well if you wish..I would love to hear from anyone who has gone through something like this, and maybe it will help another mother who will go through this in future as well to talk to me.

hugs and much love for you all

FROM THE SISTER OF BRUCE SAMUELS

hi guys ! just wanted to thank all of you that put this together for my brother bruce. he was a diehard biker(he owned a fat boy)again thank you all from my intire family

TERRY L. SAMUELS

Thank You from Mark and Laura Merrick

WOW!  My wife, Laura, and I want to thank each and every one of you who showed up to comfort Laura when she needed it.  She has sat in so many waiting rooms for me in the past 18 years, but none can/will compare to today.  She told me all about it as she drove me home from the hospital this afternoon.  I have told her on many occasions what an awesome group of people the PGR represents.  She considers that an understatement.  I want to thank everyone for coming out this morning, and we also want to thank all those who prayed and thought about us this morning.

Again, from the bottom of my heart, thanks to all those PGR brothers and sisters for ALL the support through prayers, thoughts, and visits.  You men and women welcomed me into the PGR that very first day when I showed up (on my non-HARLEY) for a mission in Ft. Worth like you had known me for years rather than seconds.  The relationship has only grown through every mission as I stand by this honorable group of people we call the PGR of North Texas.

FROM THE DAUGHTER OF GRAHAM HOLLOWAY

Last night I received a message from Valerie Holloway-Skinner thanking us AGAIN for being there Saturday. Just wanted to pass it on because hearing that, “it meant so much to the family” second hand doesn’t have the same meaning as hearing it directly. It impacts me every time I hear it and allow myself to accept their gratitude.

THANK-YOU NOTES FROM THE SON AND GRAND DAUGHTER OF BROCK EMMONS

I am a grand-daughter to the late Carlton B Emmons Sr. and I just wanted to say many Thanks myself for the beautiful display for patriotism that you show for your country and for the other service men and women. I think that it is great what you do and I have never had the honor of watching a percesion before with the flag guard and I was so moved to see the Big RED WHITE AND BLUE waving in the air that I was so taken a back. Thank you, thank yall for what you did and for what you do for everyone else. It is well deserved!  I hope it gives you great pride, I know it did me.

Sincerly,

Stephanie Lenzer

To All my PGR brothers and sisters,

I know it goes both ways, but I wanted to extend my sincere appreciation to all the PGR riders who participated in the mission to escort my family to my father, Brock Emmons’ final resting place.

Many in my family who drove in the procession where moved to tears when they entered the cemetery and saw my PGR brothers and sisters standing silent with the American Flags unfurled. My Uncle who was a Green Beret was extremely moved by this show of Patriotism.

As PGR riders are honored by being allowed to participate in escorting our military heroes, so to are those of us who are graced by the PGR’s presence. My entire family was moved beyond words at the show of support from strangers. But we know as PGR members that there are no strangers when it comes to our Military Heroes. Thanks again from myself and my family for your support.

I will make every attempt to be at the next Waxahachie area mission to again express my thanks in person to all of my PGR brothers and sisters.

Always there,

Carlton ‘Cruiser” Emmons

Proud PGR member

All gave some ……. Some gave all!

THANK YOU NOTES FROM THE FAMILY OF BOB BRAWNER

Here is another thank you from Gayle Brawner, Bob Brawner’s daughter.  Both of the daughters live in Indiana and were unable to make the memorial service in Texas.  Mr. Brawner was buried in Missouri and, of course, both daughters were there, as were the Missouri PGR.  Video and photographs were taken for both daughters so they could share in the events as much as possible and it appears as though they have already gotten those.  I think it’s very kind of her to write.  I will write her an e-mail in response since I was the ride captain.

It’s signed:

From the family of Edgar Melvin “Mac” McRae

Please find enclosed a check in memory of our loving father, Mac McRae.  The North Texas Patriot Guard Riders provided a flag service at the funeral service and honorably escorted our father to the National Cemetery in Grand Prairie last month [June ed.].  Words will never be able to express the amount of gratitude our family feels towards each and every member of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders.  We know that it is a sacrifice for each of you but we appreciate everything that you did to honor our father.  Our father was a World War II Veteran and because of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders, he received the recognition he deserved upon his death!

Please accept this check and use it towards supplies needed for the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders to carry out future missions.  We are in full support of your selfless work and appreciate each one of you!

THANK YOU FROM SYLVIA GARZA, SISTER OF LEE GONZALES

Thank you all so much for honoring my brother, Lee, yesterday and today.  Because I was already in the funeral home for the rosary and services, I missed the flag line.  I'm sure you made us proud.

The motorcycle escort to the cemetery was beautiful and heartwarming.  I'm sure many people seeing it wondered who was going by.  Little did they know that a wonderful man was passing by.

Thank you again with all my heart.

A THANK YOU FROM A VETERAN'S BROTHER

Dear PGR,

I want to say how impressive my brother Lee Gonzales funeral was. You guys ROCK!! Everyone was so thoughtful and caring, I could tell their feelings were from the heart. Gran, short, and the rest of the crew were tremendous. Everyone who attended said they had no idea that the ceremony and procession would be so grand.

My words can’t express my gratitude, Lee would have been proud of you all. He was truly a patriot in life and in death. My family and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Always an American

A WELCOME HOME LETTER

A THANK YOU FROM ONE OF OUR OWN

My name is Andrea Harmon and I am a member of the North Texas Patriot Guard Riders.  My dad passed away 2 days before Father's Day and I had the honor of having the PGR at his funeral that following Friday.

For one of the most horrible days of my life, the PGR was my strength.  Knowing that these perfect strangers would come to honor my wonderful Daddy was so special and touching to me.  There are not enough words to express my appreciation at having you there.

Everyone who came to the funeral said the service was amazing and that having the PGR was so very special and memorable.  The escort from the building to the gravesite couldn't have been more moving.

So, from the bottom of my heart and my mother's heart, thank you so much for making such a horrible day for our family as special as it could be.

Sincerely,
Andrea Harmon

EXCERPT FROM A THANK YOU NOTE

Mr. Dyer,

There are no words sufficient to express how much I appreciate the service you and your team members provide.  Your presence at my father's (Edgar "Mac" McRae) funeral and cemetery services in June was comforting beyond anything I could have imagined.  Thank you so much for being there to honor my father.

Many pictures have been uploaded (found via the calendar page) to your site.  According to the camera icons, these were done by Bobby Short, Gary Hill, and Bill Mayo.  So many of these are breathtaking for me and will be something to treasure forever.

Thank you again for all you have done...and continue to do for others.

A LETTER REGARDING THE ROBERT PRATT MISSION

On behalf of the ALR, Sonny Starr (ALR Advisor) and particularly the friends and family of Robert Pratt, I would like to thank you personally for a job well done. Note: I'm sure Sonny will not mind me writing this note since Bob and he went way back together and today was obviously a very difficult time for Sonny saying his last goodbyes to his old friend

Today was a particularly difficult day due to the heat and congestion at DFW Natl. Cemetery, but as usual, the PGR stepped up and Honored this fallen Patriot. Though this was my 12th Mission, I am still amazed at the dedication of the PGR members who brave the searing heat, cold, wind and what ever else is thrown their way to Honor our country's Heroes.

Just an FYI: Just after the ceremony today, a well dressed lady who looked to be in her 50's came up to me in tears, hugged me, and said " I don't know how you guys do this, but I want to thank you all. What you all did today and what you all do for our Vets is wonderful." I simply said" It is an Honor and privilege maam". She hugged me again bringing a tear to my eyes for a moment. As she left, she turned again and smiled.

Steve (Ghost): A special thanks for your concern and professionalism today as always!

The PGR touches many people in many ways, and I am proud to ride, when I am able, with such a dedicated bunch of folks who are truly American Heroes.

MR. WILLIAMS GETS A TRIKE!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Ride Captain Mike Lambert received an e-mail from the daughter of Tommy Williams, the husband of Bobbie Williams, whom we escorted last week.  You might recall that Mr. Williams is a motorcycle rider from way back and rode on Mike’s trike from the Elk’s Lodge to DFW National Cemetery.  I believe you can say the PGR had something of an impact on Mr. Williams and his family from the letter below.

Well Mike I just thought I would drop you a line and let you know that Dad bought himself a Harley Trike today. He went yesterday and bought a "Road King" without telling anyone and when we found out we worked on him to put a sidecar on it. My brother Charles went with him this morning to talk with the dealership about putting a sidecar on it but it was going to be 3 months, so Charles and Dad looked over the trike and he decided that it might be better cause it has reverse. He will be practicing on it for awhile around the neighborhood but he really wants to ride with the Guard so it will not be long before he is on the road. Joyce

Looks like we have a new recruit, and he is most welcome.

Also a pat on the back is due Mike Lambert for establishing such a good relationship with the family that they feel comfortable in remaining in contact with the PGR and even joining up.  Good job, Mike.

Steve Lucas
Deputy State Captain
North Texas PGR

Greeting to the North Texas PGR.

I am Bobbie Jean Williams' daughter, Joyce Foster. I would like to express my heart felt gratitude to the riders and flag personal that attended my Mom’s internment. Your presence was an honor to our family. My Mom was and my Dad is very much like each of you, in that they have the heart of a volunteer. Volunteers are what make this country great. I know I speak for my family when I say that coming around the corner and seeing all those motorcycles and cages with flag flying in the wind was a real treat and a sight to behold. My Mom took great joy in making sure the cemetery flags were in good order and the honor you gave to her and in turn to my Dad will never be forgotten. She never served this country in the military but she served in the only way she knew how, by taking care of the veterans at the hospital by helping to provide dinners, Christmas trees, and parties over the years. From the very bottom of my heart…..

Thank you.  Joyce Foster – Katy, Texas PGR#119662

FROM THE EARL LOLLEY MISSION

“Patriot Guard Riders,

Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your lovely “Flag Ceremony” for Earl Lolley.  Thanks and ride in good health.

Earl Lolley Family”

This card came subsequent to the Earl Lolley mission:

“Our family would like to say a big thank you to the Patriot Guard Riders for all you do to honor the men and women who served in the armed services.  We really appreciate each of you for what you do.

Thanks

A THANK YOU FROM A GOLD STAR MOM

This is Kei Torres, Cpl Jason LaFleur's mom. I wanted to thank you and all the PGR for attending and honoring our Fallen at Trinity HS this last Memorial week. Thank you for attending the memorial at Trinity HS. Thank you for all you do to honor and remember our Fallen. The memorial at Trinity HS was at such short notice. And yet the PGR found the time to fit it in. Trinity High School is so energized over this memorial. They are planning on doing this every year. They are already making plans for next year's ceremony. For one thing,  they are planning on moving it to the am. To make it an assembly for the entire school to share.  We'll invite the PGR ahead of time, to give you plenty of notice.

I was unaware of the PGR until we suffered our loss. And sadly at that time, I was numb to everything around me. When we arrived at the charter facility to receive Jason, there were all these motorcycles, guys, women, flags everywhere. The temperature was Texas at it's best, about 101 or 102. We witnessed you taking your oaths to protect our son all the way home. It was an amazing and  humbling experience.

Since that day, I've witnessed the dedication of the PGR, the honor extended by the PGR. You are a comfort to me. I try to thank PGR members at each event I attend. I always think of the selfless individuals that stood in 101 degrees to protect us from harm or anyone that might harbor ill feelings. We were lucky to my knowledge we didn't have to deal with any of that. I have heard that others have not been so lucky. But the PGR was there to keep those away from the families.

Thank You for all you do. Thank you for being there for us.

Gary Maddux - - August 22, 1945 - April 1, 2009 - One Of Our Own

From Gary's Wife, Ritab>

Subject: My heartfelt thank you!

I cannot begin to express my heartfelt thanks for the PGR's participation at Gary's funeral. I have a pretty good vocabulary, but in this case, mere words do not come close to the gratitude I feel in my heart for the PGR. All those present were a source of peace and comfort for me. I sincerely enjoyed meeting members who knew Gary and had become friends with him. Knowing that he had so many PGR friends makes me feel like I still have a piece of Gary with me. Every time I see a PGR member who knew Gary, I know that person knew Gary and therefore, I have a instant bond with that person and will now consider them to be my friend as well.

As for the procession...I have only one word...WOW!!!! It was absolutely stunning!!! Never in my wildest dreams, could I imagine such a spectacular send-off for Gary. What a tribute! I am a veteran myself and I understand the bond that vets and military have for one another. I saw it first-hand at Gary's funeral and at the cemetery. I was in such awe, I must confess, I couldn't even cry. I was so proud of Gary and all of you who were there to honor him!!!!

Please let Mr. Ballard, the Medal of Honor recipient, know that his presentation of the autographed book, Medal of Honor-Portraits Of Valor Beyond The Call Of Duty, will be treasured and honored in my home. This man who Gary honored on his last mission trip for Mr. Ballard's valor, took the time to remember Gary is just mind-boggling! I am truly honored and humbled by his kindness!!!

It is my desire to become more involved in the PGR to carry on Gary's passion to honor veterans and their families. The PGR had become Gary's God-send ministry and now it has become mine. Please let me know in what capacity I can help. I will do my best to honor your request!!

Once again, please accept my thanks for being a part of Gary's final mission...his funeral. It was an experience I will never, ever forget. I am still receiving comments on just how spectacular it was. It will remain in my heart for my lifetime.

God Bless and please know that the Lord rides with all of you!

Sincerely,
Rita Maddux

Bobby, I really don't know how to say thanks to you and the rest of the guard for such a wonderful gathering for Gary.

It is just to mind-boggling to think of all that happened that day. I would have to say it was one of the best days of my life, under the circumstances.

Everything went perfect, and I have never met so many wonder people. I would like to thank each and every one of them, but I guess that will be impossible.

Could you please pass my thanks on to the proper people.

Missing Gary is like someone had reached into my chest and tore out half my heart and it sank to the bottom, but thanks to God and the Patriot Guard Riders have lifted it back into place. Someday, in the near future, when my life isn't so hectic, I will be able to ride as he did.

I can't thank you enough.

Larry Maddux

From Adam Kinny, Step Son Of Gary

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank each and every one of you for all of the dedication, compassion, prayers, and respect that you showed my mother Rita, the children, friends, and church members of Gary.  The church drive was a very touching scene to see of all the Patriot Guard Riders and Old Glory.  All of you showed the utmost respect for a fallen brother and veteran when the pallbearers brought Gary's casket into the church.

I know without a shadow of a doubt that Gary was smiling down on all of us that beautiful spring day.  The funeral procession was spectacular and all of you rode in style and grace.  It was a very moving and a fitting tribute to see all of the motorcycles with the American Flags waving in the wind in front and behind the funeral coach.

Once we all arrived that the National Cemetery you did not stop honoring Gary.  The ceremony would not have been complete without all of the Patriot Guards Rides there showing their love and respect.

Gary was not my father but I respected his values and the love for his country.  It seems in today's society some of us take for granted of the sacrifices that our military and veterans have made for this great country of ours.  Both of my parents are veterans of the Army during the Vietnam Era and I have been raised to show veterans and the flag respect.  It was a great pleasure to meet Mr. Ballard one of the Metal of Honor recipients at Gary's burial.  I took the time to personally thank Mr. Ballard for being present and for serving our country.  I also introduced him to my nine year old son Jake and explained what Mr. Ballard had done for our country.  It is people like Gary and Mr. Ballard that make this the best country in the world!  If you have a way to contact Mr. Ballard I would greatly appreciate his contact information so I can write him a thank you letter.

Once again I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart as well as from my mother's heart for everything that you have done for Gary.  Your organization is class act and I will always remember what you have done for my mother's husband as well as for our country.  God Bless All of You!!!  May you ride in the presence of Christ.

Sincerely,

A Thank You Message From A Friend On The Raymond Munden Mission

Date Of Notice:  03/08/2009

Dear Lisa,

I go to church with and am friends with Brad Munden.

As a Navy veteran from the Vietnam era, I have kept up with Ray through his brother. I am saddened by his death.

I want to thank you and the Patriot Riders for what you do to help and protect the families of those who have lost their lives in combat to protect our country and Freedom in general.

Last year, my wife and I worked with our Dallas Baptist Association cook team, when we were invited to cook for the Military in McKinney, Texas in September. The only words I have to describe seeing the PGR was hair raising and humbling to see so many from my era showing support to this  generation.

May God Bless all of you for this effort of yours.

A Thank You Message From The Son Of M/Sgt. Thomas Jenkins

Date Of Notice:  02/17/2009

My family and I wish to thank the Patriot Guard Riders for the greatest expression of respect and honor given to my father, M/Sgt. Thomas Jenkins, last Monday at the DFW National Cemetery. All of the family was speechless in trying to tell me of their thoughts to pass on to you. Having stood in the flag line many times before I had felt the pride and emotion that was given to the family and serviceman at the service. But until having been the receiving party, I did not know the effect the PGR has in supporting the grieving family. On my next mission this will be a reminder of the importance of what we as PGR do.
I really don't know exactly how to express our corporate gratitude, but I hope you will take pride in the moment you created for us.

Sincerely,
Tom Jenkins (T-J)

Dewey,

I want to thank you for your attendance at my son's funeral and for the plaque.   I saw so little of the PGR there and never had the opportunity to meet any of you other than yourself.   I saw many names in the registry book with PGR next to them and I can't begin to tell you how much it meant to me for you all to be there.  Many members of my family and many friends commented on how touched they were by your presence there and the honor and respect you showed to Jacob.  I know my father sent you a message himself.   He had never heard of the PGR and on his blog today when he listed the things he was grateful for for this past year the PGR was on on that list.    He also was one of the ones taking a few pictures of you which I so appreciated since I saw so little of you all.  I know it was a physically miserable cold and windy day and I appreciated so much that you were all willing not only to ride in such bitter cold but to stand there for so long in that cold wind.  I know you didn't know Jacob but he would have been so honored and grateful as well.  I hope you all had a chance to hear some of what his family and friends had to say about him and perhaps to watch the slideshow his family put together for him.   He really was a special man in many ways and my heart aches that Lillie will not have him to raise her but there are many who want to help her mother with that.   She not only looks much like him but has his energy and zest for life.

There really are no words to adequately express my gratitude for all of you.  Know that you do help with the healing process for the family and that you all do a great job of demonstrating honor and respect.  I have actually been a member of the PGR for quite some time but have never gone on a mission.  Jacob attended a funeral for one of his fellow Marines in 2006 and the PGR was there and he was so impressed with them and I believe that is when I joined.  I learned to ride the Harley my husband bought for me but have never been comfortable on it so don't ride anymore.  My husband does and I ride behind him and we do hope to become more active with the PGR.  So hopefully I will be able to meet you all in the future.  Please pass on my thanks to the others who attended and know that what you do is a great thing and that you do make a difference.  Never doubt that.

Sincerely,

Bambi and James Hayes

Thank you for your remembrance of Jacob.  I'd managed to hold things together fairly well until I arrived at the funeral home and saw the bell and flags and your members standing at attention in that cold blowing wind.  It is truly a great and generous thing that you do.  May God bless you and all of your riders.

A PGR FLAG SENT TO IRAQ FINDS A NEW HOME

Date Of Letter:  12/26/2008

You may remember signing a PGR flag at the request of Terri Tranter at some recent missions.  It was for her best friend who is stationed in Iraq.  Here is a message from her friend about where that flag is now:

Guess what I got in the mail today! A flag, some coins and a COOL T-shirt...good timing!! On Christmas day!!

So I was showing everyone in the office, and Vicie (our NCOIC) - asked about the Patriot Guard, and told the office a story, that choked everyone up.  Her daughter, also in the Army lost her finance - he was killed in AFG last year, Terry (Vicie's daughter) was serving in IZ at the time, and because they weren't married yet, the Army would not let her leave IZ, to go back to the State for her fiancé's funeral, so her sister went (Kathy) - Kathy took over 100 photos, and sent them to Terry in IZ, the most touching thing to was that over 1,200 Patriot Guard rider's met the body, at the airport, and escorted it to the funeral procession, holding up traffic for hours in the town!!  She said the PG stood for hours waiting for the plane and then for the funeral, all holding flags.  When Vicie told this story nearly the whole office was in tears.  The really cool part was that EVERYONE knew about the PG, and said GREAT things about the PG.  I explained to Vicie about you, and your friends in the PG, and asked if she wanted to give the PG flag to her daughter (also named Terry) and she nearly cried, and said that for sure her daughter would cry, because even though its been over a year, she still is mourning her fiancé'.  SO I hope you don't mind, but I gave your flag and a coin to Vicie for her daughter.  So, not only did the whole office get to share in the PG’s gift - we gave it to a young troop who lost her fiancé in AFG.  So, you may want to relay that story to your friends at PG - the troops in IZ are as proud of them, as they are of us - and thank THEM for their service!!!.....and thank YOU for thinking of us!!

We DO make a difference in peoples' lives, even thousands of miles away.  Thank you for what you do!

A Thank You From Fellow PGR Member Greg Jouglard Of The Houston Area

Date Of Notice:  12/13/2008

On behalf of the family of PO2 Albert Jouglard we want to send a heartfelt thank you to the N. Texas Patriot Guard Riders for being in attendance at the internment service on 11Dec08.  While it was a difficult day for my Mom, Sister and I, we all feel that your presence added to the service in a way that would have meant a lot to my Dad.  I am sure Dad was in Heaven looking down on all of us that day being proud that Patriotism is still alive in America .  He was always proud to have served in the USN and did so as his duty to serve this Great Country.  The service to honor our fallen heroes remains one of the highest honors any of us could ever offer these great men and women who selflessly serve our Nation.  Thank you for your respect, honor and presence at one of my family's difficult times.

10/20/2008

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Edith Smith, “the afghan lady,” just forwarded me an e-mail from the parents of Sgt. Wesley Durbin, who was killed in Iraq and for whom we conducted a mission not too long ago.  I’m sure that those who participated in it will remember.  Edith had sent them an afghan and the Durbins had sent a thank you letter in which they remembered and thanked the PGR.  I thought everyone might like to see it and have included the message below.

Again, thank you to everyone for what you do.  You are important and this message from the Durbins again reinforces that you do make a difference in the lives of the families of the men and women we honor.

Steve Lucas

Dear Edith,

Our family is so touched by the gift of the Comfortghan!!  The box was sitting at or house when we arrived home from attending our son's Memorial Tree Ceremony at Ft. Stewart.  Needless to say, we were emotionally and physically exhausted from the trip.  Our hearts were warmed when we opened the box and saw the beautiful Comfortghan made with loving hands for our family.  What a wonderful ministry you are providing.  At this time, we haven't been able to take the tags off because we are comforted by the fact that people all over the country are sharing in our pain.  We thank you for your part in this project.   It truly does mean more than you can ever know!

We also thank you for your participation as a Patriot Guard.  Everyone and I mean everyone is still telling us what a respectful presence the Patriot Guard made in our final honoring of Wesley as we laid him to rest.  There were several things that were very important to our family as we dealt with this tragedy and one was that Wesley was given all of the honor and dignity we could manage.  We didn't want any media interference or protesters to detract from our laying him to rest in God's hands.  The Patriot Guard did such a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful job of helping us with that task.  We give thanks to God for your organization and what you do for the families of fallen soldiers.  Being left here on earth while our loved one has gone to be with the Lord is a hard job and we thank you for helping us as we try to continue on each day.

I wish I had eloquent words to tell you how we fell about each one of you, but I'm not gifted with that ability.  But, know we love and thank you all!

May God Bless you and keep you and may His face shine upon you and give you Peace

A SUMMARY OF SEVEN FALLEN SOLDIERS IN A HELICOPTER CRASH

By Steve "Badger" Lucas
10/08/008

Ladies and Gentlemen of the N. TX PGR:

Please forgive my tardiness in not chatting with you sooner.  I think we’ve all been appreciating this brief respite after last week, which is what I want to visit with you about.  By the time you read this, there should be posted on the calendar site a letter from Captain Stillinger of the 2-149 to us and to the families who lost loved ones in the helicopter crash.  Captain Stillinger is in command of the Armory and those troops who did not deploy to Iraq.  I hope you take time to read it.  It’s very moving.

The members of the PGR in N. TX once again came through when asked with flying colors, literally.  The Ride Captains did a magnificent job.  Many of those who were not able to make these very short notice missions were in contact with their PGR friends and were certainly there in spirit and your presence was felt by all.  The Ride Captains have not yet posted their after action reports but I know we all look forward to reading those so we can have their unique perspective of the missions from being so close to the families, the military and our members.

There are so many very human stories to relate from these missions, as there are with every mission.  From that C-130 touching down at the airports with one of our own, Mike Brewster, actually on the plane as Crew Chief, bringing the soldiers home from Dover with the TX flag flying proudly from atop the plane, to the Casualty Assistance Officer who would stop at nothing to obtain a police escort for his soldier and finally stopping at night where a police officer had a car stopped on the interstate and identifying himself as being from the Army and asking that officer if he could help him – and getting it, to our own Rick Crabb taking pins off of his own vest to give to little girls at a visitation who were admiring them, to students from a Midlothian middle school journalism club being at DFW National Cemetery filming for an upcoming Veteran’s Day celebration and coming upon some helpful PGR members who showed them how a grateful nation says a final goodbye to one of its fallen heroes, and the list goes on.

Through it all stood tall and proud the members of the Patriot Guard Riders.  Our family and friends.  Each carrying out our shared mission.  Conducting yourselves flawlessly when family members of these heroes are at their most vulnerable and when even the smallest misstep may cause them pain.  The PGR members are solid, supportive and never make that misstep.  The people who really matter, the family members, universally praise you and did again last week.

I have a unique and very fortunate opportunity to be able to participate in missions in several roles.  As I see PGR members at a mission; as a group in an escort, standing in a formation or flag line, you are impressive.  As individuals within that group as one gets closer you are uniquely dressed but obviously a part of a team with a common purpose.  But if a person would be able to get to know you individually, as I have had to the privilege to do with so many of you, they would find warm, caring patriotic individuals who do what they do out of love and respect.

I am lucky and honored to be associated with such fine people as all of you.  I feel it my duty to let you know how much you are appreciated by those around you.  Whether you can attend 1 mission or 1000 missions and whether you ride a motorcycle, drive a car or truck, or walk, each person is equally important.

And Bill Mayo says thanks to everybody who helped push his motorcycle!!

Steve Lucas

Gentlemen,

Throughout the last week, as my battalion faced the tragedy of seven fallen soldiers in a helicopter crash on September 18th, the Patriot Guard Riders were present at all events.  I continue to be amazed at the dedication of the people in your organization.  I did my best to thank as many of you as possible, but time did not allow.  I wanted to share with you an e-mail that I sent out to the families of our deployed soldiers after a long week of funerals and memorial services.  That e-mail is below and I encourage you to pass it on as appropriate.

I appreciate all you do for us and look forward to seeing you at the battalion’s homecoming next June…and not before then (no offense).

CPT Randy Stillinger

Rear Detachment Commander

2-149th Aviation Regiment

Family and Friends of the 2-149th,

Well, it’s been a long two and a half weeks for our battalion.  We were saddened and shocked with horrible news and have now said farewell to our fallen heroes.  It’s been emotionally draining and tiring for all involved, especially for those who lost a loved one on September 18th.  Please forgive the long e-mail ahead, but I wanted to take some time and roll up my thoughts and share a few things with you.

As I attended each funeral, I noticed many things that caught my attention.  Many of them similar, some things different from one to another.  There were seven flag-draped caskets, seven renditions of taps, seven 21-gun salutes, seven fly-overs, and seven families going through what is probably the most difficult time in their lives.  While many things were similar, as is the custom of military honors, I took mental notes of the things that caught my eyes and ears at each event:

We started in Kingston , Oklahoma last Saturday to honor CPL Thompson.  Kingston is a small town near the Texas border and has all of the great qualities of a small rural town.  The size of the town meant that many people knew our fallen soldier on a personal basis.  Other than the very large flag that hung from the ladder of a fire truck, the thing that truly impressed me was that, as we processed from the high school to the cemetery in a 3-mile long convoy, everyone stopped their cars and got out to pay respect.  I also remember farmers taking a break from tending to their fields, taking their hats off, and then placing them over their hearts as the long line of cars went by.  It is something that I will never forget.

Oklahoma City was our next destination for a memorial service to CW3 Rudolf.  The thing on Sunday that initially caught my attention as we walked into the church was the honor guard spread out along the stairs in the front of the church.  They stood there at parade rest for quite some time protecting our fallen soldier while honoring him and his sacrifice.  After the service the entire congregation followed the family outside and stood there in silence as the four CH-47 Chinooks approached from the distance.  It made the hair stand up on the back of my neck and brought many to tears as the Patriot Guard stood by in silence.

That evening we made the long drive down I-35 to San Antonio to be there for the services and interment of SGM Ordonez on Monday.  During the service, a beautiful song was done in Spanish.  Although I don’t recall the name and didn’t understand the words, it was no less moving and poignant.  I think the reminder to me was that we live in a multi-cultural country where people of all nationalities have stood up to defend American values and our way of life. After the drive to the national cemetery, we stood and watched as the horse-drawn caisson pulled up with the flag-draped casket.  As they pulled away, I caught sight of the rider-less horse with empty boots turned around in the stir ups and was blown away by the significance of it all.

On Tuesday, many of us went to Denton , TX to honor and remember Mrs. Diane Reeves, the wife of SFC Ben Reeves.  Many soldiers and co-workers showed up to support SFC Reeves and his family.  We also went to pay respect to a wife who has endured the anxiety and fear of watching her husband deploy overseas, like so many are experiencing right now.  After the service, we spread out to attend three different homecomings at three airports in the Dallas /Ft. Worth area for CPT Vallejo, CW2 Edwards, and SSG Mason.  At each of the arrivals, the crew of the C-130 poked a large Texas flag out of an opening in the roof of the aircraft as it taxied to its parking space.  When the aircraft stopped and shut down, the honor guards went on board led by a Chaplain.  As our fallen heroes were carried down the ramp of the aircraft, reality set in for many who showed up to pay their respects.

Wednesday evening many of us split up to attend the visitations and prayer services for CPT Vallejo and CW2 Edwards.  I was able to attend CPT Vallejo’s visitation and witnessed friends and relatives come up one by one to talk about their memories of CPT Vallejo over the years.  It brought a very personal side to a sometimes regimented process that is typical in the military.

Thursday was a long day.  The thing that stood out in my mind about CPT Vallejo’s funeral was when Hillary’s dad got up and sang a flawless rendition of The Lord’s Prayer.  First of all, I don’t know how he maintained composure through it all, second he is an incredible singer who took the opportunity to share his talent with the congregation on a day that his son-in-law was being laid to rest.  As the convoy of vehicles processed to the D/FW National Cemetery, the Ft. Worth Police Department literally shut down interstate highways to allow us to go by.  Vehicles were not allowed to enter the ramps and others were not allowed to come up from behind.  We had the highway to ourselves as the ever-present Patriot Guard Riders led the way.

CW2 Edwards arrived at the pavilion at the D/FW National Cemetery in a horse-drawn carriage reminiscent of the Wild West.  After the carriage arrived we stood in silence as American flags waved in the breeze.  We stood on a hill overlooking the cemetery and watched as Apache helicopters appeared on the horizon to pay tribute to CW2 Edwards, who spent many years serving in the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade.  As the flight approached, one aircraft broke off to symbolize a missing man.  The precision of the honor guard always impresses me as the flag was taken off the casket and folded with extreme care before being presented to the family by MG Mayorga.

After the interment of CW2 Edwards, we drove up to Springtown for the visitation for SSG Mason that evening.  The funeral the next day (Friday) reminded me of Kingston , OK where we began this journey almost a week prior.  Springtown is another small town whose residents turned out in droves to honor their hometown hero.  The flags of the Patriot Guard flew proudly as we entered the church.  A large replica of the Liberty Bell rang every 15 seconds or so adding an ominous feeling to the situation.  It was incredible.  Just like in Kingston , people lined the streets as the convoy went from the church to the cemetery.  Policemen blocking traffic stood at attention and saluted as we went by.  Others waved flags.  I acknowledged their show of respect by mouthing “thank you” to them as they stood by.  At the grave site, I vividly remember the bagpiper that marched slowly towards the casket playing Amazing Grace, stopped, and then turned marching away into the distance as he played a familiar Irish tune until he faded away completely.

Friday evening, SGT Cabiness and I drove back to Oklahoma City and spent the night there before going down to Norman , OK for the funeral of SGT Eshbaugh yesterday.  Unfortunately one of the images that will be stuck in my mind will be that of a few hateful protesters who showed up to preach their hatred for those of us who wear the uniform, and those who support us.  While it’s a shame that this image has been etched in my head (and almost regret even mentioning it here), I was able to look at the big picture and realize that these cruel people have the right to do what they were doing because soldiers like SGT Eshbaugh have died to ensure that they have that right.  I also take comfort knowing that they were surrounded by the Patriot Guard Riders and shielded by members of the University of Oklahoma ROTC holding large American flags.  After the funeral, we drove to Ft. Sill National Cemetery , the final resting place of SGT Eshbaugh and thousands of other heroes.  The quiet rolling hills of the area were a fitting place for the final tribute to our seven soldiers who died on September 18th.

It’s been a long few weeks for all of us and I pray that we never have to go through it again.  I realize that tensions are high among the families of the 2-149th and that many of you are still losing sleep because of fear and anxiety.  Even as we were driving home yesterday, news on the radio mentioned another helicopter crash in Iraq and we started the process all over again.  I know that many nerves were again rattled because the phone calls started coming in again.  Thankfully for us, no 2-149th soldiers were involved and we were able to confirm that pretty quickly.

Because anxiety is very high among the families of deployed soldiers, I encourage you to seek help if it becomes unbearable.  We have a great group of Army Chaplains in the area that are more than willing to take the time to meet with you to talk it out.  They are trained professionals and know more than most people what you are going through.  There are also a number of other resources available to deal with this stress and I encourage you to check out the resources on our web site or contact your company FRG Leader.

Finally, I want to thank the many people who stood up to respond when news of the accident came out:

First and foremost, thanks to the officers and NCOs who were called to do a difficult job on September 18th.  Your role as Casualty Notification/Assistance Officers was critical in the care of the families of our fallen heroes.  I know you will continue to care for them in the coming weeks and months.

As always, the FRG jumped into action and were there ready to support our soldiers, our families, and also the Rear Detachment as we handled the administrative and logistical details over the last few weeks.  I appreciate the big cup of Starbucks coffee that appeared on my desk every morning.  I’m disappointed that time usually didn’t even allow me to finish it.

Thanks to CPT Casterline, CPT Fuller, and CW2 Brite for coming up from Austin to assist with all of the administrative and logistical details.  Thanks also to COL Meehan for taking the media by the horns and keeping them in line.  We were definitely overwhelmed by this tragedy and your assistance made it all possible.  I owe you all lunch.

Thanks to MSG Morgan and my staff for working many long hours.  Since the battalion left in August we have been kept very busy with Hurricane’s Gustav and Ike, and now with this.  They have stepped up to the mission and have been very supportive of me through it all.

Thanks to Chaplains Combs, Vaughn, Wallace, and Bender, and also to Reverend Bucy for stepping up to assist during a dark period in the life of the battalion.  I asked Rev. Bucy, the father of one of our soldiers, to help out on the morning of the 18th and he proudly said yes.  He was “baptized by fire” by the Army on a very difficult day.  I appreciate all of the chaplains who have helped out over the last few weeks and appreciate the times that you pulled me aside to see how I was doing.

Thanks to my higher headquarters at the Brigade, Division, and State levels for responding to all of my requests and granting them without question.  This was a group effort requiring work on all levels.  COL Schultz, Brigade Commander for the 36th CAB, also made it to all seven funerals over the last week and has endured long hours to make it happen.

Thanks to Mrs. Terri Brock, Mrs. Tanya Kubista, and Chaplain Hokkanen for coming down from Minnesota to represent COL Brock (34th CAB Commander) and the rest of the 34th ID as they traveled with us to each funeral.

Thanks to LTC Harrison, W01 Snow, and our other friends in Oklahoma as we paid tribute to our heroes.  Although we will butt heads on the football field in the coming weeks, it didn’t matter what side of the Red River you were on over the last two weeks.  We went up there and they came down.  It was mutual respect at its finest.

Finally, thanks for all of the calls and e-mails of encouragement from so many of you.  It kept me going.  I had the pleasure of meeting many of you during our travels and it was great to put faces with the names.

As we go forward with the mission, as we must, we can not forget the families of our fallen soldiers.  As I met with them over the last few weeks, I assured each of them by saying that they are always in our battalion’s family, no matter what.  One of the great aspects of the Army National Guard is that we take good care of our own people.  This is true now more than ever.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Respectfully,

CPT Randy Stillinger

SGT WESLEY DURBIN:  09/21/2008 - 09/22/2008 - 09/23/2008

Escort From DFW Airport To Funeral Home, Visitation, Funeral Service, Escort To DFW Cemetery

Fellow Riders,

Here is another touching Thank You from those you have touched with your dedication, presence, and love. In this case, the parents of Sgt Wesley R. Durbin. Well done.

Bill

Steve,

There are really no words that express the gratitude we have for the services you provided for our beloved son, Wesley.  We were overwhelmed with the respect you showed our son from the moment of his arrival at the airport until he was laid to rest at DFW National Cemetery.  The motorcaid from the Faith Lutheran Church to DFW National Cemetery was incredible.  The events of our son's death have made things very difficult for our family.  Being able to complete all of Wesley's services without the media present was so important to our family as we wanted to give Wesley the honor and dignity he deserved.   Thanks to the Patriot Guard this was accomplished.  We wish all of you God's Richest Blessings.  May the Lord Bless you and keep you and give you Peace.
The family of Sgt. Wesley R Durbin

Steve,
A personal thank you to you for organizing everything involved with Wesley's arrangements.  If there is anything we can every do you you or your group, we would love to help in anyway possible.

DONALD GENE HILL  09/17/2008

Funeral Service And Interment (Colleyville)

To the members of the North Texas Patriot Guard Rider's

On behalf of the family of Donald Gene Hill, I would like to say "Thank You" to the Patriot Guard Rider's. Everything you did at his service was greatly appreciated by his wife Mrs. Pat Hill and the rest of the family. They all spoke very highly of your "honor guard" and how they presented themselves to the family as they arrived for the service. Pat didn't know what to expect when I first talked to her about contacting you. After seeing the flags at the funeral home when they arrived and seeing the flag line at the grave site she was extremely pleased with what you did. The honor bestowed to her husband by your simple actions is something that will live in her mind for the rest of her life. Your mission to show respect and dignity to those who have served their country's call is something I take very seriously. I know from my talks with Donald Gene over the years that he would say "Thank You" for what you did.

It is my extreme privilege to be associated with a group such as the Patriot Guard Rider's. To take your own time to do the things you do to honor Veteran's in today's world where so much is forgotten is extremely rare. May you continue your "outstanding effort" and may it always be appreciated by the families and friends as much as your mission was appreciated by Mrs. Hill and her family.

It is with a sense of pride in your efforts that I send this to you on behalf of Mrs. Pat Hill and her Family,
Gratefully,
Donald "Mitch" Mitchell
U.S. Army Veteran
VietNam Veteran

Just got this. Please forward to all concerned. Thanks also to all in East Texas!!!! Great Job!!!!

Mr. Raglin,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and all your members from Texas that participated in the funeral for SSG Armstrong in Longview, Texas on the 9th of August. I have never been as touched by the actions of a few great Americans as I was that day.

SSG Armstrong had recently redeployed from Afhganistan from a 15 month deployment were he was directly responsible for taking care of approximately 15 Paratroopers conducting Force Protection, Combat Logistic Patrols, Air resupply, Sling load missions among other combat operations. His duties were always carried out to the fullest and always distinguished himself to the utmost, and brought great credit to his his unit and the entire 82nd Airborne Division. He was tragically lost in a traffic accident and his death was hard on his family and all who had the privilege of serving with him.

It is a tradition in the 82nd Airborne that regardless where the Paratrooper is from, the burial will always be conducted from within our own ranks. Paratroopers from his Company served as the burial team in a way to pay our last respects and honor one of our own. I was
never expecting your organization to be there, but I can honestly say I have never felt as proud and humbled by your presence. I didn't have the opportunity to thank all of you, so please share my sincere thanks and gratitude to all of your members. Because it's people like you that continue to motivate our service men and women to put their life's in harms way!
